This is a spin-off from JongnoGuru's thread but since they mentioned an interesting use for coffee I thought, "Hey, lets talk about coffee!"

I'm recovering from a night of drinking soju and the first thing I reach for is my box of Maxim insta-coffee. Even coffee has fallen under the "Well-Being" craze with this polyphenol coffee mix. It's got a slight mint taste, but it's not all that.

I'm surprised at how much instant coffee has taken hold here and especially in Taiwan if anyone's ever been there. Naturally it can't compare to fresh brewed coffee but I am being a lazy bum. Also I can't find ground coffee easily and if I do it's usually those small packets of Maxwell House Blue Mountain and such.

Any other interesting uses for coffee other than used grounds as ash tray fillers? Ever try insta-coffee dipped with Digestive crackers? Good stuff!

If you want good coffee, bring it from Europe.

Naturally! and would like to but I gotta live in the real world of Korea where I walk down a local Mart aisle where I'm flanked by insta-coffee on one side and insta-ramien on the other. I'm just waiting to be routed by insta-somethingorother! Smile

Wangja, you're liable to kill threads posting like that. This is the Coffee Talk thread, not the Let's all be snooty and try to derail this thread thread. I suggest you put your attitude in order and come back to discuss issues like... instant coffee, "well-being" instant coffee, how much Koreans like instant coffee, different kinds of instant coffee, instant stuff you see when you walk down the aisles of Korean supermarkets, etc.

What I want to know is, does anyone besides me buy those instant iced coffee products for the summer? They come in individual servings and in bulk. Which brand is best? Did you ever get a nifty gift when you bought some of that? I did, but I can remember know what it was. Anyhow, I'm fresh out of that instant iced coffee mix and I should get some more.

It seems insane to me that anyone would pay good money for that worthless powdered crap they call instant coffee.

Last winter at 서강 I did an essay about coffee and discovered interesting things. Korea is a strange country: about 90% of the coffee sold here is the instant sort which is completely the opposite of most of the rest of the world.

I also looked at the health concerns and discovered that coffee is good for you. So, I've increased my coffee intake quite a bit.

Actually, as far as coffee ranking goes, Europe doesn't figure in types of bean (being that they don't grow any) but types of roast and preparation. Hence, Kona could be roasted and brewed European style.

While you're on the topic of coffee;
on one end of those long sachets of instant coffee there is a number, from 1 to 10. Someone told me that it relates to how sweet the coffee will be, i.e 1 has only a little sugar, and No.10 has lots. I haven't done any controlled testing to confirm or refute this Smile , so does anyone know anything about this?

It will be working.

Q: How many German engineers working all over Chuseok does it take to fix Wangja's office espresso machine?
A: It should only takes 1 of us five minutes. Please stop with the lies.

This works best when read in a Bavarian accent.
