Recently, all language programs at a corporate company that I was employed for were cancelled. I am considering engaging in part time employment to substain myself until the next hiring spree. The concerns I have are as follows:

1) Long distance commuting time.
2) Sporadic schedule and work hours.
3) Short work hours periods (1 hour for each session).
4) Absence of payment.
5) Full time position becomes available and I have to resign and am not paid.

Please provide and useful experiences and comments regarding this issue. Much appreciated!

Justin Moffatt, for your sake I hope that's either not your real name, or that you're here on an F2 or F5 visa.

Here's the scoop from what my friend (with F2 visa) have told me about privates:

Quote:
1) Long distance commuting time.

If possible, make them come to you. If not, get a scooter and travel only within few km radius.

Quote:
2) Sporadic schedule and work hours.

Quote:
3) Short work hours periods (1 hour for each session).
4) Absence of payment.
5) Full time position becomes available and I have to resign and am not paid.

Above issues can be eliminated if you get into an agreement with set schedule/week (i.e. 2 hours/day on M-W-F or T-TH). The fee must be paid in advance either weekly or 4 weeks. Also they must agree not to cancel the scheduled class, if they do, it's still chargeable and you already have the money.

Good luck!

The long travel is just time wasted that you could be teaching.

It'll tire you out, too, and you'll be dragging your ass when you do teach.

I'm an F-2er, and my thing has always been to start providing a good service and hopefully other schools, institutes, business, colleges, etc., will hear about you by word of mouth and offer more work.

Try marketing yourself through your first part time job. Give them a discount for every new student or work assignment they bring you.

Helpul advice by all. My understanding is that one can get permission from your employer to attain part time employment. Is this true?

Secondly, has anyone had any luck or horror stories from part time employment acquired by recruiters? Thanks again.

I've had places close down on me, failure to make payment, suddenly I get a payment that's half of what they promised, you name, I've had it happen to me.

Don't trust anybody to pay you later. Get all your money up front or same-day pay service. If not, you risk working for free.

The nicest Korean hogwan owner, private lesson, etc., can be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I just got stiffed on a part-time gig for 500,000 won by a recruiter on the "other" site that begins with a "w."

Always get your money up front.

I want to start doing lots of privates and part-time hagwan work, but how do I get started? I have the appropriate visa, but I need to find the work.

I guess hagwan work is easy to find by answering ads, but can I ask to be paid at the beginning of the class? I don't trust a hagwan to pay a part-time/temp teacher after class. I'll ask private students to pay me at the end of every class, or if they pre-pay a month in advance, I'll give them a discount.

So two questions-

1. How do I find private students

2. How do I get schools to pay me at the beginning of class

Thanks!

That's what you do, get the pay for November on November 1st.

Then you can work with a smile on your face knowing that you've been paid.

That's what I do, and if you're a good teacher, they'll do it. Go do a demo lesson and let them see your ability and if they really want you, they'll pay you up front.
