Actual article title: Chinese top foreign crime totals
http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200610/kt2006100817150010160.htm

The Article wastes no time getting to what its readers want to know most of all - American crime! hehe

"About one third of the offenses committed by Americans here this year were traffic related, while more than 40 percent of crimes by Japanese were related to foreign exchange, the Ministry of Justice said.

The number of foreign criminals in South Korea was 8,046 in 2002, according to the ministrys data presented to Grand National Party lawmaker Ahn Sang-soo on Oct. 7.

....

Chinese accounted for 65.7 percent of this years figure with 8,162 people, while Americans took up 6.7 percent with 838 people. Japanese accounted for 1.9 percent with 238 people."

It's odd that they lump in traffic violations in with crimes of violence, fraud, and theft. That's baloney. If I get a traffic ticket in Michigan or am caught speeding it doesn't go on my criminal record. here, it totally inflates the number of American "criminals" in Korea.

Traffic offenses are by far the biggest source of presidential pardons here, if the news reports I read are accurate.

Anyway, considering how common traffic deaths are here, it's not necessarily unreasonable to lump them in.

I am curious about one thing.

What is the statistic on crimes per capita? (Is that the right way to say it? I mean for every, say, 10,000 people of Korean, Chinese, American, Japanese etc. nationality, what are the crime rates?)

I wonder what the percentage of Koreans offending in the US is as well. I bet prostitution offences top the list along with DUI.

I once stole a toilet roll from a public toilet. Perhaps those hooligan Brits should be added to that list, too?

Americans responsible for traffic offenses? How many Americans have you seen riding all those autobikes on the sidewalks and riding through red lights???!!! Don't make me laugh!

I don't think you'll get a realistic statistic for Korean-derived crimes. Many crimes go unreported here - domestic violence especially is meant to be a big under reported occurance, for example. You also never see raids on the local street hawkers. It's well known they pay someone a backhander to be able to pitch their wares on the street.

I have read many times the US citizens in Korea ( Soldiers included) commit less crimes per capita than Koreans in all different types of crimes across the spectrum.

I've often thought there really would be some value to someone compiling crime statistics in the U.S. for say . . Korean nationals, Japanese nationals - - That way, when they make a big fuss over some American committing some crime, you could pull out your own stats and counter their "holier than thou" story (not that they would actually pay any attention to you, but . . )

Like the way Korean press made a national news story out of the poor fellar, English teacher at a university (Chungnam?) in Daejon who brought a hooker to his room, which happened to be in the dormitory building (never mind the uni's cheapness in making an invited professor stay in a dorm rather than coughing up the money for a proper accomodation) . . . Would loved to have had stats on the number of Korean men arrested in L.A. or NYC for soliciting prostitution.

Exactly. I was about to post here something about how the DVD sellers are showing up everywhere these days. Used to be they were sort of back alley, now they're in all the most conspicuous spots: all over Jongno, Myeong-dong, Insa-dong, as well as Shin Chon, Hongdae, Itaewon, Bundang. It's not like they're hard to spot. Somebody's getting their wheels greased big time.

In Thailand, I figure it's a poor country and this is probably an important source of income for some poor people, with a few guys getting super rich off it. But in Korea, a country that makes its bread and butter on intellectual property rights (technology) - - - and where there are certainly other things these sellers could be selling or doing - - it is shameful.

Heheh. Those "free-information" hippies remind me of Republicans: never thinking about what will transpire in the future. They probably want all films to be $20 homemade jobs anyway. Cheap bstards.
