I'm just wondering what you've observed with your Korean friends hearing about the now nuclear North Korea. Anytime I've ever mentioned anything about North Korea, they just seem to get tight lipped and don't say much. With this new nuclear news, I thought maybe something different would happen, but nope.. same old silent reaction.

I think most people are just waiting and wondering what will happen next.

I don't see what else can they do really.

Its better than having the whole country out burning Kim Jong-il effigies on the streets.

Reading the K.Times and the herald..the reaction is markedly different from the old to the young generation.

Old generation:

"The north has betrayed us again. we must focus on building a better relationship with the US"

Youngsters:

"North K acted within their rights to defend Korea from the bully superpower America".

My boss seemed kind of rattled about it. The younger folks at work didn't seem to worried about it.

I talked to my boss about it, and he spoke for most Koreans by saying that they don't worry about North Korea because NK has always made threats but never actually done anything.. So that's that.

I asked some students what they thought, and they were mostly opinionless. Some said that it was good for N. Korea, not so good for the rest of the world. Others said that KJI knows better than to attack anyone because China, Japan, SK and US would be all over him like flies on turd.

I think it is time to sever connections with North Korea because this time they have really gone too far.

I believe that North Korea will be truly isolated now. I believe this was an act to get other countries to remove financial sanctions. That won't work now.

But there are other fears to consider now. I am worried about military action. I hope this all ends now, with the test of this nuclear device. But I'm not sure I believe anything they say anymore.

We feel quite helpless.

I am speechless. It is very shocking news. Koreans have just finished a long holiday celebrating the full moon. It is a bad time for this to happen.

It is shocking because I thought North Korea was just pretending to have nuclear weapons. I never thought they would test this quickly.

The only reaction I've heard so far is one adult student who doubted the tests really happened. I think it's harder for South Koreans to admit the North could do this because, well, they are still Koreans. If Texas separated and started stockpiling nuclear weapons, would the rest of the US be able to turn their backs on them?

I had a small chat with some North and South Koreans I know alot of them are indifferent to the news.

The belief is that Koreans would never attack other Koreans.

Obviously, they've never heard of the Korean War.

Towards the end of my adult class of 10 students I asked them their opinion and they laughed it off. I told them about some of the responses in the forum and they laughed even harder.

I don't think they are really that relaxed about it. This is their home and to allow any possibility of real threat into their minds will affect them in so many ways that they are probably better off NOT admitting the truth of a looming threat. Is there really anything they can do about it? Not really so live life the same as always. I guess it's kinda a defense mechanism to protect their own sanity while living with insane neighbors.

Not sure if this makes any sense...just a few quick thoughts!
