So I just found out that my parents are going to China for some tour in November and I really want to meet them for the weekend. I'm hoping to maybe get a friday off so I can leave on thursday night.

How much is the ferry and how much does it cost?
What about flying? are flights really expensive? How much is a visa?

thanks!

Ferry is slow and then you need to catch the train into Beijing from the coast.

Flights run from 400-600k won. A taxi into the city cenbter from the airport runs about 60-70RMB depending on traffic.

Visa cost will depend on where you are from. Most people pay 35k won but Americans pay 60k. This is for 4-day service.

Next day service is 55k and 90k won.
Same day service is 75k and 120k won.

The consulate only does visa processing Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs. and ONLY in the mornings.

ferry is 15 hours or so to weihai or qingdao (US$90 for cheapest). to the port closer to beijing (i forget whats it's called but it starts with 't') it's closer to 24 hours (i think it's $120 ish).

flights to qingdao for around US$120 one way then overnight train to beijing for about US$20 would be the cheapest (without ferry).

or direct to beijing should be around US$400 return. bus from airport is 16 yuan ($2) each way

I woudl rec. the flight- I did a 3 day weekend in beijing once and even taking the shortest route possible (air), it just seemed so rushed... The flight only takes 2 hours (plus early airport arrival, and transportation to Inchoen, depending where you are- maybe you can go the night before...) The flight will cost you between 400-500 W though... BUT if you know a korean, there are frequently discounted airfares offered in Korean online- you just need someone to sort through them for you and make the calls... and the visa is expensive- but Beijing is great. There's a great rec. for a tour guide I posted here too- under Beijing travel if you need/want (or your parents do) any kind of assisstance while there... We booked a group tour on the 3 day weekend and most of the day was traveling to other hotels to pick up/drop off other guests. Second trip we went through HIll (a freind of mine I met in Korea) and I can say that if you only have a few days, private tour is the way to go- its the best way to make the most of your time there...

Have your parents booked the tour already? Generally the tours a full on, will you be able to join them? Is their hotel inclusive?

Check hotel rates online, we booked into the Xinqiao Novotel for 50,000 won a night (25,000 each). We booked a 2 day tour for 50,000 won per person as well and we had a great tour leader and saw all the major sites. The tour didnt go to Tiannanmen square, but the hotel is only 1km away anyway. Flights cost us 400,000 won.

heres the tour link

We booked flights through Xanadu travel

Im sorry I cant find the link for the hotel. We paid 350RMB per night for an economy room - we were on the 11th floor with a view.
