So I was walking nearby 대흥 station for the umpteenth time in the last three years and I finally noticed a place that sells coffee beans and was opened apparently three years ago.

Anyway, just for you coffee dudes. The sells several different kinds of coffee and you can get it roasted to specifications (American, Medium, Medium High, German, French, Italian) and if you order over 30,000 won worth he'll deliver it.

I wonder what his story is. Is he like the guy who runs the taco shop by Noksapyeong, who worked in Mexico for years and then came back and decided to sell tacos?

Nope. He studied photography in Japan and he likes coffee.

So, here in Korea he's a photographer in the morning and in the evening he sells coffee.

I rememeber this guy...
I also rememeber Bueno I think he was one of the first micro roasters around he was in Bundang on the back street of Samsung plaza back in 99
then went out of business around 2001 from there espresso started to grow in korea with starbucks..
my very first job in korea was to work in the coffee business..
I was a coffee rep back in NZ , was brought over here to help manage a coffeeshop.. I rememeber the first day so clearly..
I walked into the coffeeshop and was blown away..
elegant coffeeshop, beautiful furniture nothing like we will ever see back home.. phones on every table. and the young people all dressed up..
OHH the ole days!! 1997! sure was different here..
so I sit myself down at one of the elegant tables and the boss asks me what I would like.. I say a cappucino will be fine..
5mins later a waitress brings over a nice elegant cup and places it down in front of me..
I take one look at it and say" I'm sorry I ordered a cappucino"
she replied.. I know.. there it is..
this time the boss is worried.. OHH OHH whats wrong..
ummmm nothing I think.." can I see your espresso machine and meet your barista now?
OF course he replies.. so over we go to Mr kim I straight away notice there is no espresso machine.. dont know why I was expecting a beautiful la marzocco machine to be there.. anyway.. would have looked great thats probably why.. anyway!!
so I asked the barista.. UMM correction.. lets call him the coffee maker!
"excuse me can you show me how you make cappucino"
now I have only been in the country a few hours hahahahahaha
I was already shocked from people wearing masks walking around the street and I took off my shoes to enter the bosses house..
IM already high on life and culture shocked! LOVING IT!!
so he reaches down and pulls out a tin which says!
CAPPUCINO MIX!! knocks out two tea spoons into a cup, adds hot water , bit of whipped cream and finishes it off with hundreds and thousands!
hahahaha im like this boss is a GENIUS!! he is charging 5000 won remember this is end of 96-early 97 that was bloody expensive!!!
im thinking DAMN the profit on this cup must be ENORMOUS!!!
who needs an espresso machine when koreans dont care!!!
hahahahaha

I spent the next 3 months enjoying my time in korea.. and looking around for espresso.. I came across it in the westin chosin in pusan at haeundae and again in someyoun at some little store.. both places had no idea what they were doing..

I was 22 and thought OH MY GOD! I will make a killing.. all I have to do is open a expresso cafe and I will be RICH!!
opening a place in korea was not as easy as I thought..
I returned home and then decided to come back to Korea again this time in 99.. again no espresso to be seen!!
I thought ok thats it.. im going to introduce koreans to Espresso..
I wont let a little thing like cash stand in my way!! hahahahahaaha
YEAH RIGHT!!
so that dream slowly faded away as I did not have the cash..
and slowly I saw espresso arrive mainstream!
in the summer of 2000 in Edae the first starbucks opened..
and it was all downhill from there..

but its still almost impossible to find a great latt'e in korea..

The first starbucks opened in the Ewha area, Kangnam was second. I remember seeing the news in the Herald (back when I read it) and was very pumped since I lived a 5 minute walk from there.

What are his prices? Carrefour had excellent fine ground coffee for like $3. That won't be matched in Korea.

Won't be that cheap -- it's a speciality store that roasts it however you want. I'd say the price runs from around the Starbucks speciality coffee prices to way more than that -- depends what kind of coffee you buy.

On my first day in Korea ten years ago, I had to choose between two coffee shops on a back street in Anam-dong to get my morning fix. I made the right choice - Bohemian. The owner was Japanese-Korean and a trained master coffee roaster. He did the roasting in the shop and would sell fresh ground versions of his roast at reasonable prices. However, he did have his peculiarities. When I tried to buy a half kilo off him, he asked how much coffee I made at home each day. Upon hearing my answer, he refused to sell me more than 200 grams because it would lose flavor before I could use more than that (even if I kept it in the freezer, he insisted). No difference in price, but attention to detail. He did a nice Irish coffee in shop.

The shop is still there; I've seen it on a few trips up to Anam-dong recently. But, as I don't drink coffee so much any more, I haven't stopped in. I will try to do so soon so I can report back here on whether the same guy is still running it and what's available there.

Espresso is just a roast. Any coffee bean can be roasted to that level.

...and the grind. Grind any coffee fine like espresso, put it in your espresso maker, you'll get the same potency--but will taste like "whatever bean you have" concentrate. Mmmmmmm!

It's about time a real coffeeman started selling quality coffee in this city. It's unbelieveable how this market has been left untapped for so long.
