An advanced student of mine discussed in class (topic discussion class) that the US wants the war, so it can sale weapons. That when the war starts the US will abandon Korea. I kept my mouth shut and let her talk. Anyway, at lunch we were discussing graduate school options and I asked her where she wanted to go? She said, "The USA" |

No surprise. Look at Osama Bin Loden...he went to a US college for somethin' or other. They all need the US at some point. |

Korean students don't often make that mistake. You should calmly but firmly explain that it is impossible for any country to sale weapons. |

When you get your evacuation notice from the Embassy, hope you have at least one day advance notice. That day, buy a giant love-stick, and make it a point to teach hypocracy the hard way to the student. |

Jenny Cafe, Shin-Jeju Shi.
Do you hang at this place? If so, you may have the opportunity to meet a few like the poster.
Jenny's is cool. Check it out for your culinary and social pleasures, eh. |

Osama Bin Ladin did not go any U.S. institution. That is correct. There were members of his clan who did business in the U.S. and attended American institutions. I am sure there were Indians who were educated in England who went against England in the 1930s. People admire many things about the U.S., but when a heavy hand is used improperly in the eyes of others, than there is trouble.
I do not see a contradiction with not liking the U.S. government and some of the attitudes in the U.S. that propped up many cases of bad judgement that government carried out and wanting to go to an American institution. The person did not state they dislike Americans and American institutions.
Anyway, your student is a young man. What does he know about politics? As far as selling weapons, Americans who want to go to war in North Korea want to take out Kim Jung Il. They feel alarmed by his WMD ambitions. I think many people in the world, in the U.S. feel the pit bull approach of this current administration part of the reason why they failed in their foreign policy regarding North Korea. |

I agree with this to some extent. Even if she had a wholesale dislike for Americans (which is quite different from disliking the government) it's only pragmatic to want to go to an American university. There's no real contradiction or hypocrisy there.
Frankly, I'd find it odd if I ever met a young Korean who didn't have a deeply ambivalent opinion of America. |

actually, I only stated what happened; I did not editorilaize the statement on here. If anything, I encourage controversy in my classes and held my peace until asked. I applauded the student who had writted up such sensitive questions. One was if they thought the US Military should remain on Korean soil. They all agreed that they should. Of course they had reservations as they stated that the US Military gets by with hurting and Killing Koreans. I have heard all this before.
They did ask me my thoughts and I stated that Bush's foreign policy may be repsonsible for a lot of what we are seeing at this time. At the beginning of his time in office he cited Iraq, Iran and North Korea as being evil and then invaded Iraq. This of course alerted both Iran and North korea, both of whom since have gone in the direction of obtaining nuclear capabilities. Both feared that they were next on the list for invasions.
The students know I am an American and felt comfortable enough in the class to express their opinions, which is a great thing.
I made this post to hear everyone's response, which for the most part has been quite interesting. |

Since? Hasn't North Korea been working on developing a nuclear weapon since the Eighties? Bush's comments might have sped things up for them, but the nuclear program of North Korea is nothing new.

Yes. I'm a teacher, LOOK OUT!
Now, if after I typed "when you get your evacuation notice" didn't clue you in that I was being facetious, then I'm alarmed that YOU are an English teacher, as obviously you are not nuanced enough in comprehension to understand context and satire thereby missing a goodly part of the English language, in all it's glory.
Ah, also see that you pointed out my typo. Bravo. Perhaps push the screen a few inches away from your face, and you'll pick up on the actual meaning of things...it will however possibly cause you to skip over the occassional spelling mistake...quandries! I know... |
