Is there no welfare system in Korea for the jobless?
Aren't there any shelters?
Why are there no homeless women?
Some of the guys I see at Seoul Station (frequently see the same ones each night I walk by) are young and look healthy. What's with that? There's always construction, that's good pay, just need a body.
One homeless guy tonight had a briefcase and polished shoes (couldn't see his clothes, was covered in cardboard box).
God, it must be tough in winter aye?
Do you ever give them food? I do sometimes and get the weirdest looks from other people....

Yep, most get whatever amounts of dosh I have on me to give away because they are addled by crippling depression, a cripplin' depression brought on by, in many cases, the so-called I.M.F. Crisis - a "Crisis" in which the Elites of our "Host Nation," long forked by corrupt business practices innate to this area of the world, forgot the needs of their own employees (usually well-qualified people).
Should not the shame lay on the shoulders of those who let their, usually older, Brothers or Sisters be reduced to such a state of affairs?
Really, most of the men and women you see on the streets asking for spare change think that they do not have an alternative outside of begging for money.
Please do not lose your own sense of dignity by writing them all off as worthless individuals - a lazy tag thrown at us on a constant basis by all-too-many locals.

I can relate to homeless people. I have felt close to that before, and may again in the future. Some of those people are pretty nice and down to earth. Granted, you need to be sort of nice to successfuly get a dollar or a smoke or whatever out of a stranger. At least you can feel at ease around them, knowing they aren't putting on any airs, which is really an awful thing to do.
There are homeless women. I met one not long around Seoul station. They may be scarce, but they exist.
Let's be glad we got it a bit better than some. There but for the grace of god go I, or something like that.

Sort of a funny story, not really....a friend and I were drinking near Seoul station, outside while eating a pizza, in front of a Family Mart. One guy who was clearly homeless wanders in the store and tries to steal some stuff. He was so drunk though, that when he tried to pay for something he reached in his bag and hauled out stolen stuff. So my friend and I went in and helped him out with a few bucks, though he did not need that extra soju! |

Can you be honest? Weren't you hooked on something to get you to that state? Really. Awesome that you climbed out, but really, at that point, is there a reason a person can't get even a convenience store job or janitor job to at least stay off the street? |

OK, maybe 2% are mentally ill, and another 5% just enjoy not having a home. But the guys that are sleeping at 3PM, in bummy clothes, covered with newspaper, yeah, I'll say 90% are addicts. Maybe 3% are tragic stories--gets laid off, while in the middle of a divorce, etc. Thing is, the hard-luck cases that don't descend into addiction, they are usually only in that situation for a very breif time, few days to weeks, until they get a few paychecks and can then get a place. And the hard-luck homeless would probably kick you in the nuts if you tried to feed them a sandwich out of pride. |

Agree. Absolutely. Well put (except the only 'nuts' I have are the salted kind in my hand bag). Anyway...
This always crosses my mind, but sometimes hunger is more important than pride.
How long does pride remain, when one is shivering cold, wearing mangy old rags with an empty belly and trying to sleep on concrete? Rhetorical question. |
