Can anyone recommend a good descriptive grammar of Korean? Not a grammar for teaching or learning, but one for linguistic analysis like a field linguist or linguistic anthropologist would produce.. Thanks in advance.

Routledge has published a series of descriptive grammars of different languages. A friend of mine wrote the Persian volume in the series. I just did a quick search of their website and came up with this (unfortunately not due out for a couple months, but you can pre-order):
Korean, An Essential Grammar
Author(s) - Young-Key Kim-Renaud
Series: Essential Grammars
List Price: 65.00
ISBN: 9780415385138
ISBN-10: 041538513X
Publisher: Routledge
Publication Date: 01/09/2007
Pages: 256
Korean: An Essential Grammar is a concise and convenient guide to the basic grammatical structure of Standard Korean. Presenting a fresh and accessible description of the language, this engaging grammar uses clear, jargon-free explanations and set out the complexities of Korean in short, readable section.
Suitable for either independent study or for students in schools, colleges, universities and adult classes, key features include:
clear explanations of grammatical terms
frequent use of authentic examples
Korean alphabet used alongside McCune-Reischauer romanization system
full glossary of explanations included
I just checked; my friend's book is in a different series, Descriptive Grammars, so I don't know exactly what the contents of the one I've presented above will be like, but it sounds like a description for learning purposes and not a textbook. Too bad you can't check; you might write them, though, and ask. |

That doesn't sound much different from Ross King's Elementary Korean, which is an excellent book, especially if you want to pick up the intricacies of irregular pronunciation rules. Hmm, that reminds me, I have to buy the second book... |
