Hi:

I couldn't find the thread where some women were looking for pepper spray. So I've posted this new one. I recall some people said it couldn't be found in Korea, but trust me it can be found.

Here's the link for Gmarket's listings of Pepper Spray.

http://www.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_search/search_total.asp?selecturl=total&SearchClassFormWord=goodsSearch&keyword=%C8%A3%BD%C5%BF%EB+%BD%BA%C7%C1%B7%B9%C0%CC

I hope some of you ladies will feel safer walking at night.

Isn't it illegal here?

I guess the 'I want to sex you!' chorus of high school boys had better really watch out now!

They're perfectly legal, so long as you use them in self-defence.

Gmarket wouldn't be selling them if it they were illegal. You can also find them on auction, and a few other online shops. I posted Gmarket's lists, because Gmarket is often cheaper than its competitors.

I think what is illegal is Bear grade mace. That stuff could easily send you to the hospital. Trust me on that one (I had an incident with myself a few years ago with Bear grade mace).

Tonight I put Mace on my shopping list, and then I came here and found this thread. I'm moving to Korea soon. I'm not sure airlines will allow Mace on the plane (in my checked luggage, that is). Cheers.

So what if you mace adjoshi-babo and he stumples into something and cuts his head open? Who's going to get arrested and sued for blood money then? There is no such thing as 'for self-defence' over here.

That could also happen back home in North America. Just depends who the lawyers happen to be.

I posted this because some women were looking for it. If you don't like the stuff, or if you feel it could lead to more problems, then don't buy it.

If you feel safer because you have it on your person, then great. I'm glad that link helped you.

As for my Bear grade Mace incident, well, let's just say there were no bears involved... Embarassed

You could potentially get sued, as many women have for macing someone who just wanted to ask them the time, etc. It couldn't in a criminal court because you could request a jury trial and explain to the jury what happened, and the prosector would have to prove you wrong beyond any reasonable doubt. Here it is both a civil and criminal matter, and reasonable doubt is not an issue so long as he could demonstrate injuries.

At any rate, enjoy feeling safer and please don't mace the chorus of high school boys - they're really much more afraid of you than you need be of them. I'll continute to enjoy feeling 10 times safer than I did when I lived in Canada and 50 times safer than when I lived in the US.

YSB, why not stop being so nasty, esp. with the "chorus of high school boys". Western women face different threats here than you or I do, and different ones than Korean women do. If my sister were in Korea, she could have an arsenal of weapons and I'd still jump every time the phone rang.

Reminds me of an incident many, many years ago (thirteen or fourteen). My wife has owned and operated an institute for about the last seventeen years. Years before that, I bought her a can of mace (in a leather keychain holster) and she kept it in her desk drawer in the institute. One day, while she was teaching class, I was fishing through the drawers looking for something; somehow, the "trigger" pushed up against something and discharged the spray straight up in the air. The mist carried around the institute really quickly and there was a cacophony of coughs all around. I ran around opening up windows and getting glasses of water for students. Embarassed

The real question here is, "isn't pepper spray illegal only in the make believe world of eslcafe?" Yes, there, it is.

Trust my words -- pepper spray is a)not illegal, b)not life threatening, and c)use of it will see you on your way home with no jail time. period.

I like to use pepper spray in my Korean cooking to give it that little extra zing.
