i got a phone call out of the blue a couple of weeks ago. some guy knew my phone number and my name, and called to threaten me and my wife because "she's yellow".
north american accent, sounded drunk. but i was drunk too. i hung up on him and answer when he called again. he called from an unregistered number, so i figured there wasn't a whole lot i could do about it, except for avoiding phonecalls from unregistered numbers.
last night i got a call from the same guy, making the same threats (i won't state the exact nature of the threats, except to say that it's about the worst threat one can make to a man's wife... with a spatula, and i feel it's worth repeating "because she's yellow".)
anyway... the difference this time is that he called from a mobile phone and the number showed up on my caller id.
what do you suppose is the best course of action to take in this situation? should i just wait until he gets bored with his little game and stops calling? should i hunt him down and beat the piss out of him? should i report this to the police? (is stalking even a crime in this country?)

i'm not too terribly worried about this right now... he kept giving me that 'be a man, be a man...' line, but he didn't give me his name or any other information. i don't know what 'being a man would have involved', but i couldn't very well duke it out with him on the phone. so i'm pretty sure he's just playing some twisted game. but as my wife is five months pregnant, i'd feel irresponsible not taking every precaution. i don't want this to escalate to the level of this forum's last big stalker incident.
thank you.

I don't know if it is what you should do, but what I'd do is contact both the police and the phone company and file a formal complaint. There is no reason why you and your wife should have to put up with crap like that.

Any idea how the guy got your number or how this all started?

Absolutely. Shut him down. Then consider changing your number to an unlisted one.

If you find out who it is - and it's an American - press charges here and maybe you can also press charges and/or sue him via the U.S. legal system. Also, report him to his embassy, to immigration, and to his employers to try to get him deported...

If no legal remedy works and it gets worse - figure out how you could motivate some Korean bouncer-type to kill him without getting yourself implicated...

I don't think Krishna endorses this plan of action.

Post the cell number on this website. Everyday. Encourage people to call him at all hours of the day (but not to threaten him, just to annoy). Fill out "information requests" so that business start calling him, too.

I kinda doubt that the creep found his number in a telephone book. (in Korea? Confused) My guess? Another foreigner at EotW's school, or somebody who got his name & number from the school somehow. If not, then a bad friend, or a bad friend of one of EotW's good friends.

Let me elaborate:

Changing numbers to an unlisted one would keep him shut down.

Post his number here. You need people phoning him around the clock. At 5am, at 2pm on a workday, at 4pm in case he starts late, and so on.

Why in the christ would someone come to Korea if he hates Asians? This guy needs someone to throw him a boot party.

Definitely call the police and do what Rteacher suggested too (not the part in small type).

i was going to lay into you for that one, until i saw your pm.

anyway... thanks for all of the love and support everyone. as for anyone i know, i can't even fathom it. the sad fact is, i just don't know as many people here as i used to. most of my foreign friends tend to leave after a couple years, and i've been slow to replenish the supply.
but i've got some good news. another poster sent me a pm saying he got a similar phone call last night, and included the last four digits of his stalker's phone number. lo and behold, it was a match.
my guess is that it's a fellow dave's poster with a sad hobby.
thanks again for the support. and thanks in particular to rteacher and red dog. and i'm not even going to follow that up with a snide remark.
