Has anyone registered their marriage here back in their home state in the U.S.?
Any information on how you went about doing so would be appreciated.
Thanks

RB,
As long as you register your marriage with the US Embassy, the marriage is legally recognized in the US. I don't see why you would need to do that in addition to what is required. I suppose you could, but the paperwork from the US Embassy and the gu-office is all you need. |

The marriage is legally recognized in the US BUT it is still under Korean law.
What my husband and I did was also get married in the US so we would have a US-based marriage. Easily done at any courthouse for a nominal fee. |

Thanks for both of the replies.
Yesterday, I also thought about just going through the official marriage procedure in the States to get the marriage license there. Now, with my wife being a Korean national on a tourist visa, I don't know how that would work and if there would be any reprucssions from going that route so I wrote to the Attorney General in my state to find out more.
One reason I asked about this is because when I went and applied for the F-2 recently we were told by the immigration official that they wanted to see our marriage license from the States.
She asked for this even though she could plainly see from our Report and Certificate of Marriage form that we were married in Korea and registered everything properly here with the U.S. Embassy and the Gu Office. She told us that she would accept the beforementioned form from the U.S. Embassy but officially needed the license from the States.
In addition, just last week, a friend's wife was told on the phone by an immigration official that the form she was planning to submit from his European Embassy would not suffice. He then went on to say that if they had gotten married in China and had the form from getting married there then it would be accepted. Needless to say she was irrate. |
