It turns out it was the wife who killed the babies. She claims her husband didn't know about it, and she says she killed a third baby before coming to Korea.

Apparently she was able to hide these pregnancies from her husband and give birth. Three times.

I read that, too. It's mind-boggling that #1 if she didn't want to get pregnant, why wasn't she on the pill and #2 how could the husband not know?

Clearly the woman is deeply disturbed. Normally people don't go around pumping out a baby a year when the means to prevent having them is easily and cheaply available. And then to kill the babies...one burned and two frozen and not disposed of. It's just too bizarre.

A few years ago there was a story about some guy who carried on a multi-year affair with another man without knowing he was a man. Wasn't that guy also French? Is there a category of French lovers who are not all that aware of their partner?

'Freezer babies' mom confesses to murder

The Frenchwoman identified as the mother of two babies found in the freezer of their family home in Seoul confessed Wednesday that she killed a total of three babies, a police source at the French public prosecutor's office told Reuters.

Veronique Courjault, 39, said she killed another baby by burning it to death before coming to Korea in 2002 with her husband and two children. Also, she added that the two babies found in the freezer of her home in Seoul were not twins and she strangled the babies until they died.

"She admitted killing her children herself," the police source, who asked not to be identified, was quoted by Reuters as saying.

In brief comments to waiting reporters, the Courjaults' lawyer, Marc Morin, appeared to confirm that police had secured a full confession.

However, Veronique Courjault remained consistent in saying that her 40-year-old husband Jean-Louis Courjault was in no way involved, Morin told reporters in front of a police station in Tours, France, where his client was being detained.

"She takes responsibility and she asserts she acted alone," Morin was quoted as saying by the French media. Morin did not comment further.

French police arrested the couple after a DNA test by French authorities positively identified them as the parents of the newborn babies.

A computer from the Courjaults' home in Tours was also seized by French police.

Prosecutors have yet to decide on charges to bring against the couple, who remain in detention.

The Courjaults, who have two other children, had until Wednesday maintained their innocence. They blamed the affair on a conspiracy linked to the husband's work in Korea as an engineer for a U.S. company.

The case first broke on July 23 when Jean-Louis Courjault reported to Seoul police his discovery of two dead babies in the freezer of his house in Banpo-dong, southern Seoul.

Police allowed Courjault to return to France, where his wife and two children were vacationing, on July 26.

Two days later, the results of a DNA test conducted by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation revealed that Jean-Louis Courjault was the babies' father.

Police then collected several items - including toothbrushes, two cotton buds and a medicine box - from the house for DNA testing. The NISI determined on Aug. 7 that Veronique Courjault was the babies' mother.

Korean authorities said the children were born viable and appear to have breathed. However, they do not appear to have been fed or cleaned after birth, and weighed around 3 kilograms at birth. Their cause of death remains unknown.

The bizarre nature of the case has sparked much speculation, including whether Jean-Louis Courjault was really unaware of what was going on.

Some, including Korean police officials, say it is plausible that he was not involved since he reported the case to police in July.

Others say it would have been almost impossible for him not to know that his wife was pregnant. Courjault stated earlier that he had taken two long-term business trips, ranging from three to four months, but that he knew that his wife had underwent a hysterectomy in December 2003.

The fact of the hysterectomy indicates that the babies were born at least two years and nine months ago.

Korean government officials said they expect the case to pick up speed through investigations conducted by the French police. A joint investigation with French authorities using diplomatic channels and sharing information through other routes will be conducted, they added.
