Hello,

I have a hypothetical question:
If you work for a public school (so your employer is essentially the government) and you do a midnight run before your six month probationary period is up (where technically you would have to return the airfare money which they originally paid for), can your home country somehow force you to honour the contract in any capacity and force you to return the airfare money back to the South Korean government or to the school that you worked for?

Just curious.
Thanks for your responses.

Why would you run away from your public school? If you give them 30 days notice, they'll honour your resignation. You can then go pick up your pension before you leave.

Are you that immature and irresponsible that you can't give them notice?

Taking off after payday and not paying back your airfare is essentially theft. Don't be surprised if you find yourself harrassed back in your home country to pay back that money.

Personally, I would have no problem giving the 30 days notice my contract requires... but if do that I'm worried they won't give me my last month of pay. Then again if I don't give notice, I figure they won't want to give me a release letter. Definitely in two minds about what to do.

In a public school, you will get your final pay. I have no idea about the release letter, but I'm pretty sure you won't ever be legally working in Korea again if you ever just took off from a public school without paying back your airfare or giving notice.

I wasn't given airfare money. It's one of those jobs with short hours, but that is about the only good point.

I am with Grotto on this one. Public school, you will get your last months pay.
Personally, unless you have a very very good reason not to give notice, if you do a midnight run on a public school, that only asks for 30 days notice, I wish they could/would hound you.

Otherwise its theft. That simple.

Can't you transfer schools? The provincial Office of Education should be able to place you in another school waiting for a native speaker.

i said it was a hypothetical question people, relax.
i was just wondering cause i heard of someone coming to korea just for the prepaid plane ticket and then booking it to a nearby country. so i was wondering if he would have to pay back the airfare at some point, provided he never steps foot back into korea.
