I've never had problems with travel sickness or any kind, but I actually had to stop a cabbie 50% into the trip on Saturday night to change vehicles. This guy was on and off the gas pedal every other second, making for a very uncomfortable and nauseating ride.
I seem to consistently hail cabbies that have no concept of smooth acceleration and cruising.
Anyone else experienced this? |

2004, my brother in laws wedding. Got into the most dilapidated, beat up, falling apart cab ever. The rear view mirror didn't work, the side mirror had been torn off in an accident. The guy driving the cab had broken glasses and they were crooked on his head. He kept weaving in and out of traffic more than any other taxicab I've ever been in. He cursed and prodded his way in and out of more construction along the road than I've ever seen. But we got to the wedding hall in one peice. Did I mention his AC was broken too? And he kept looking back to see the traffic behind him and kept asking me why I was looking at him... Hilarious. If there was ever a candidate for meth heads in Korea, this guy would be it... |

You can add most bus drivers to this list, too. My guess is that it's a symptom of the fact that Koreans haven't been driving for very long; nobody's father took them out and taught them to drive. Any time I get a smooth cabbie or bus driver it is the exception, not the norm. Maybe those guys learned how to drive properly in the military? I wish the companies would make these guys instructors or put them in charge of hiring new drivers. Give it another 20 years. |

| I wonder if they are trying to save gas by not keeping their foot constantly on the accelerator- that's the only reason I can find for it. Your foot gets pretty tired if you are constantly taking it on and off the pedal- hey, maybe they are trying to exercise their foot! I encounter taxi drivers like this every now and then- if I took a taxi for a long distance, and the guy drove like that, I'd just get out and change taxis. That type of driving annoys the hell out of me. |

unfortunately, this is actually wasting gas. it takes lots less gas to keep a car at a smooth speed than to constantly be accelerating. |

I know, but people who never took a proper driver's ed course most likely wouldn't know that (from what I've heard, the driver's ed courses here aren't very comprehensive). I was just trying to figure out a plausible reason as to why a driver would do that, and some people probably think that the less they have their foot on the pedal, the better. I just can't think of any other reason as to why someone would drive like that- I mean, it's not a smooth ride for the passengers, nor the driver~ |

fair enough.
i find that intercity bus drivers do the same thing on the highways, so you might be right about the driver's ed thing. |

Seoulsucker,
You weren't in Mokdong, were you? I took a taxi last night that was exactly as you described. On and off the pedal, he was maneuvering the steering wheel the way children do when they pretend to drive - you know, back and forth, back and forth. Not only that, he was perhaps the slowest cab driver I've ever encountered in Korea, making the trip doubly excruciating. If I'd been alone, I would have done the same thing you did. |

Right. But I have asked a few why they drive like that and the response is always... saves gas.

I'd think throttling the gas peddle would use up more gas then it would save, but I'm not sure.
Did the cabbie charge extra for the amusement ride?
*just kidding*
I've had some cabbie's (and bus drivers) like that as well. |

I've been on some of the world's tallest, fastest amusement park rides without as much so a vurp, but this guy almost had me yelling at my feet. |

| It's not just cab drivers. lots of people do the constant accelleration/decelleration thing. I enjoy walking so much more now. |

| Prehaps this is a gross generalization, but having lived in Vietnam, Thailand and Korea, I can safely say that Asians are just sh!te drivers. Simple as. |

I'll tell you something funny. My girlfriend just started driving recently, so her dad enlisted his chauffeur to teach her how to drive. The guy, who was supposed to be teaching her how to drive, ran into a tree while backing up! (did not offer to pay for the damage to her brand new car, either. class act!) |
