hey all

i saw a few ads here for mountain bikes, and i've made inquiries about one.

but to keep my options open, i wanna ask around.

anyone got a mountain bike they're trying to sell?

i'm about 170cm (5'7" i think)
... prefer a foreign made bike (no procorex or crap like that).
... prefer disk brakes (depending on price)
... looking to spend less than 300,000 won.

if you've got something in that range, or just on either side of it, let me know

Someone is selling a Giant mountain bike.

Having done some mountainbiking in the best place for the sport (aka British Columbia), I can tell you a few things to look for:

1. Disk breaks aren't all that important, but they look cool.

2. Are the shocks elastomer or hydraulic? Elastomer shocks will wear out and stop functioning after a few years (depending on how you use your bike)

3. What kind of derailleur does it have? Accept nothing less than a Shimano Altus (that's pretty low in the Shimano lineup, but it will do the job without breaking down). If you can afford it, XTs are great.

4. What do you need the bike for? If it's mountain biking, then pay a little extra more money to get something decent. If it's mostly riding around Korea's roads, then get a touring bike. If it's racing, then get a road bike.

5. Do you plan to carry things on your bike? Double check the bike to make sure you can fit a rack, so you can drape some pannier bags over it.

6. What kind of shifting does it have? Thumbshifts are great, so long as they have something called rapid-fire (easy return to preset gear). The newer palm-grip-turning things can be a pain to adjust.

7. Do you plan on using a lock and a water bottle? Is there enough space?

8. Do you want to use cycling shoes? There are duo pedals, one side for runners, the other side for cycling shoes. Then there are regular pedals (shoes only), and cycling-shoes-only pedals.

9. Is the seat adjustable? Do the wheels have quick release levers?

10. Do the cables run on the outside or inside of the frame?

12. Are there any cracks on the frame?

13. How smooth is the front derailleur? Is the chain smooth or does it have kinks? If it's got kinks, you'll have to replace it (otherwise be prepared to have it skip or fall off).

14. Are the rims aluminum, an alloy, or steel?

15. Do the tires (not the tubes) have any cracks? If they've got cracks, can you patch them? If you can't, foreign matter may get in and ruin your tubes.

16. What size are all the bolts, screws, and nuts? It's always good to carry around a few tools (you never know).

17. If you've got cantilever breaks, have they been adjusted appropriately?

18. Are there any rust spots? Could be a sign that your alloy bike, may not be quite so much of an alloy as your seller claimed.

19. How wide is the seat?

20. If none of this makes any sense, or if you don't care about these things, then the bike being sold at the above link will be good enough. You'll probably have to adjust the seat low, as 19" is a good fit for 5'10" and up.

I will want a bike once I get to Korea as well, I'm arriving around Nov 1st, and I'll be staying in Gunsan, I hope there are alot of bike paths, and places to go for bike rides, as I will know no one, and basically be loner, lol....

I cant' read ANYTHING in korean, those websites are useless to me. Hopefully they have ad's in english for shit for sale...like bikes etc.
