Hi,
I'm new to this so cut me some slack if I do something that goes against message board etiquette...
My boyfriend and I are planning on going to Korea to teach in December. Over the past couple of days I've applied to a whack of different recruiters. So has my boyfriend. I've received at least 10 e-mails so far...he has received only two. I am a Canadian Citizen but I was born in Korea and I'm obviously Korean. I can't speak Korean, though. He is a nice white boy. I find it bizarre that I'm getting all the responses. I thought it was easier for non-Asians to get teaching jobs...was I wrong??? What's going on? Now I'm worried that he's not going to get a job...and I thought at first I'd have to tag along behind him and look for a job over there...looks like it may be the other way around. Can anyone explain this? |

Gender bias is alive and well in the land of the morning calm.
Teaching kids is girls work.
You are a girl.
Girl trumps boy. |

From what I understand, women in general have an easier time getting jobs here- it's not just you.
The directors might be sexist, but it might also be that Korean parents want female teachers for their children (meaning directors are only acting upon the sexist views of their customers, and not necessarily sexist themselves).
But he should be able to get a job here- there are lots of men teaching English to all age groups in Korea. |

He'll get a job don't worry. In addition to teaching being "women's work," most hogwan directors think women are easier to control. And since you are a Korean women (in there eyes), you will be even easier to control than a foreigner.
He'll get a job. Don't worry. Just be patient. |

| Remember to get an F-4 visa. As a woman you'll get all its benefits without the risk of being liable for military service. |
