It must be pretty rubbish being an American abroad these days.
It seems the only way to ingratiate yourselves with most non-Americans is to be extremely self-deprecating. I almost feel sorry for you guys. I am English, and England has done its fair share of damage the world over, but we seem to be ok.
Does it bother you guys?

When you're number one in the world, some people love you and some hate you. You can't please everyone.

I love Americans. I lived there for six years. Even though many don't have a clue about Canada, they would go NUCLEAR if anybody screwed with us.

PS

The US sometimes screws with Canada, but very gentle and diplomatic like. (eg, the US judicial system determines any trade disputes in America's mindset)

That's nothing more than your projection.

It feels quite good, tyvm.

If any American feels the need to ingratiate him/herself with any non-Americans, that person hardly deserves to be called an American.

Yeah, it kinda sucks sometimes but like blujeanguy said" When you'r number 1 in the world..." I've honestly just come to appreciate American's more and think less of many others.

Eh, the rest of the world can shove off. With things being the way they are there would no making everyone happy. Obviously we're not doing a good job of making anybody happy right now but thems the breaks. I'd still rather be an American than any other nationality right now. (Mostly cause we have the military bases in place to get me out of here if things go south.) Smile

England has ruined everything it's ever touched.

That's no shot at you personally, essexboy, it's just the truth.

My family's roots are in England. When I read the history books, I cringe when I recall it. I don't often offer that to people when they ask about my heritage, because it's embarrassing. That said, I've never been embarrassed to acknowledge being an American.

Hmm...

They brought peace and prosperity to all the major shipping lanes after the battle at Trafalger (sp?). Pirates were virtually unheard of during the 17th and 18th centuries. They kept policing it virtually free during this time too, mostly out of pride. They really should have taxed the world for their maps and protection Wink Still, doesn't make up for everything else they did.

Ihave lived in Asia over 22 years and you get a different perspective when you live away for a time. America seems to be a pain in a lot of people's butt, however eliminate America and I am not sure things would necessarily be better. I personally do not like Bush, but our system will shove him out after this term and we will hopefully have a better candidate than what we have had. Thank God our system does not keep them more than 8.

The people around the world who dislike America are either jealous or too unsphisticated to see the big picture.
No empire-like nation throughout history has been as benevolent as the USA. Yes I said empire-like. Because despite popular belief, the USA is not an empire. If she were, she would go into Canada and just take the oil, water, and lumber with no problem. The US would also just shoot all Mexicans at the border.

Those who can see the big picture, the elites and world leaders, love America. The US does the things that need to be done for free. The Chinese love the USA for keeping Asia and the Pacific Ocean secure. This has allowed china to trade its way to wealth without having to spend a dime for secuirty. Europe has realized secuirty without having to spend militarily or get its hands dirty.
Yet when these same politicians need votes in the next election or need to justify their regimes, the populist card comes out and big bad America is the first entity criticized in order to blame that countries problems on Uncle Sam.

It feels pretty damn good I'll tell you. I am even more happy to be American now that I'm abroad. I ignore the poeple who have #1 Hatred Syndrome and talk to the people who know and love my country as I do. And the former is much less common than the latter.

I've never experienced anything other than benefits from being American, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

India and Pakistan have railways because of English colonization, (not to mention cricket); a small price to pay for a few thousand deaths and British Imperial rule. Laughing
