|
|
Today I gave a mid-term exam to one of my second year classes. I told them exactly what would be on the exam. I probably told them at least 4 times. I even wrote the questions and answers on the board. Well, they absolutely bombed. I could understand if the material was difficult, but this stuff was basic. I feel like Simon from American Idol. It's bad singer after bad singer. |

The test was too hard. The students weren't up to the challenge. Just because you teach the material doesn't mean that they understand it. |

Im with the OP. I write piss-easy tests, go over every question the same day of the test, not to menion its what we'd been studying for the past few months..... some kids do ace it but others crap out completely! Serves em right for talking/playing/sleeping while I was (trying) to teach them.
And no I dont let them get away with that behaviour but it certainly doesnt stop them from trying! |

They don't seem to take it as seriously as school exams. (Which by the way, many are in the middle of midterms).
A good punishment might be making them write out the corrected answers x amount of times as a punishment, along with a signiture from their parents.
Actually, that's not enough of a punishment... |

I love it when I give them a worksheet with 10 vocabulary words and their exact test definition the day before, and even forget to scramble the matching on their test so that all they have to write is a, b, c, d, ... and they STILL get it all wrong. |

On top of that, tell the students to get their parents signature on the test paper along with a simple standard letter stating that parents need to encourse the kids to study and/or do their homework. That will cover your ass when *beep* hits the fan and management start bombarding you with "why" questions. |

Is their grade in your class included in their GPA? I know in many schools it is not, rendering the class 'irrelevant'. |

Isn't the OP talking about uni students? Still, it might not be a bad idea. |

It is a Uni class. Even though I would love to have there parents sign some something, I don't think it would be appropriate. I have 2 more classes to give there exam. I can't wait. |

A nice phrase to keep in your back pocket, from a former colleague at a high school back home:
"Every student has the right to fail."
It goes well with:
"I don't give out grades. Students earn them. It's nothing personal. I'm just the guy with the calculator." |

If you fail them you might just hear from the parents, in any event. Maybe you could suggest they lower their kids' curfews from 12 to 10pm so they have more time to study.
Mind you, I once had a uni student's father call to complain in Canada. The prof refused to speak to him so I told the departmental secretary that I'd just love to, so put me on the line the next time he calls (I was the TA). 'Well maybe Britteny [that was really her name] wouldn't be failing if she had handing in her first paper three weeks ago. And what do you mean there are no books? I was down in the bookstore this morning and there were a stack of course textbooks. Would you like me to have the bookstore call you back on this?' ... that shut him up. |
