I'm considering giving it a shot. I've been to Taiwan, though I doubt that really compares.

I've heard lots of negative stuff, but then also hear lots of that about Korea too.

I figure it might be worth a try. If it doesn't work I could come back. I have never been to the PRC, just Taiwan and Hong Kong, which I know are not the same at all.

Should this be in the Travel forum?

I lived there for a year, if you have any questions. The China forum might be more useful, but it's filled with a lot of long time MA holier than thou sex starved freaks who don't actually really say anything except to fight the same battles they have been fighting since the dawn of ESL cafe's creation Smile

I got back from a trip there recently. The Chinese expat scene did nothing for me. Then again, I don't usually get much out of it here either.

That country's rougher to work in than Korea for sure. If you can't hack it here you don't stand a chance over there. But if you're up for a challenge, it would definitely be worth it.

I was only there for a year and a couple of trips after. Still, it's not for everybody. I liked it better than Korea or Japan just because Japan and Korea are too much like home. You can live quite comfortably in either, though i know many on here disagree, but I am just better at adjusting to new things than most of the complainers here obviously. I liked China because it always changed and gave me just enough stability to live fine but not to get stale. I hope to go back in the future. I am not saying people who don't like it are any less, just that they have different lifestyles, characters or views. I loved it, and would probably love Thailand and Vietnam too (a lot of the same, a lot of different too though).

Having said that, they see whitie and immediately overcharge you by atleast 800%. Planning is even less the rule than Korea (if you can imagine that). etc... There are a lot of things that would drive a lot on this board crazy and running for the sanity of Korea again Wink

jaj, I'm curious as to what you want to get out of your job/location/lifestyle. What is it about China that makes you think it might be worth living there semi-longterm as opposed to anywhere else? I'm also wondering what kind of differences you would expect between China and Taiwan (the real china 4 eva ok?) - and Vietnam for that matter.

I would consider China if the final amount of money I could send home was on par with what I could make in Korea.

Don't know what you're sending home from Korea, but you could try Vietnam - My savings averaged around US$1000 a month with a much higher standard of living than in Korea.

Once you register for the other forums, you can view the China Off-Topic forum, which in a lot of ways mirrors the attitude here. Personally, I'd never go there. I loved Taiwan---which I choose to consider indipendent of the PRC---but I don't see any benefit of living in the PRC.

Vietnam has interested me actually. But the idea of starting over in terms in language/knowledge, etc doesn't really inspire me to get my butt in gear and get moving!

I never lived/worked in China.. but I've spent a couple months traveling there over a few different trips. Felt like Korea intensified to me. But significantly less English abilities, etc.

An almost identical thread was created by him.

And I still have him in my thoughts.

It was not meant in disrespect.

In fact, quite the opposite.

But some things are lost in cyberspace. Sorry if it offended anybody else who also knew him.
