Recent current events + growing scarcity English teachers = better conditions and better pay for those who stay
What do you think about this formula?
and... how can we make it work for us?! |

The one thing that won't change is that scummy, cheap, unwillingy to coordinate, selfish expat teachers will always negate this formula. The fact that our wages have been stagnant for the last 7 years only seems to reinforce this for me. |

global warming = more air conditioner sales
extinction of fish stocks = more jobs for cattle ranchers
war, disease, famine = more viewers for our news channel
Maybe it's true that recent events are somehow good for ESL in the long run, but it just makes me feel callous!

No. Supply and demand are wonky in Korea, and lots of us are overpaid anyway. |

We would somehow have to promote the idea that the Korean peninsula really is this dangerous place that's on the verge of becoming either a radioactive wasteland or the next Sunni triangle.
However, if we do promote that idea, people will wonder why exactly we're sticking around here, and begin to question the charade. |

Interesting point. Perhaps I should stop putting down all the wusses posting 'Is it safe to come here' messages on the various boards. We could tell them that we've actually gone home or can't afford a ticket, or else we'd be out of here. Or we could say that some of us basically can't go home because of trouble with the law or creditors ... oh wait, that part's actually true. |

Yeah screw people who have the savings and assured future job prospects to take a mid-career break and teach, happy to trade the maximum salary for lifestyle considerations! |

I thought this thread was going to be about how, with the "Atomic Clock" now ticking loudly above their heads, more and hawter Korean chicks would start viewing ESL teachers as attractive marriage/ticket-outta-Dodge candidates. But no. |
