It seems that 2.2 million won has become basic standard starting rate for most of the hagwons now. Based on what I've heard from many teachers here, the starting pay rate for even the teachers without any teaching experience are getting this rate without any problems.

I am getting well above 2.2 million since I have several years of teaching experience. Do any of you still getting less than 2.2 million?

I think many people are still getting 2.0 or 2.1

Though most places will pay 2.2 if more foreign teachers demand it.

Of the people I know in Cheonan that have told me their salaries, I would say about half are getting 2.2, while the other are a bit more (more working hours) or 2.0.

My job offered 2.2 straight away, without negotiation. It seems to be standard now for them.

That's pretty good - a 10% increase over about two years. With the political situation at the moment and the won falling it will probably have to go even higher.

How much would you ask for if you didn't need their housing?

I guess it depends on teaching experience and the location where you are.

I'd probably ask for an extra 500 000, but be willing to settle for 400. Of course, it depends on where you school is....big city, rural, etc.

Without factoring in the exchange rate, it's nearly a 100% increase over the last 10 years, actually.

I'm getting 2.1 and this is my second year in Korea. However, most of my offers were in the range of 2.3 million. I didn't make my decision based on just the salary though.

Those who are legal and have legit degrees can get 2.2,and it would be higher but many schools are willing to hire those without educations for a lot less. The illegals will continue to be paid less and will cause salaries to stay lower than they should be.

Stupid question; are you talking about gross or net pay per month?

I can't know this, but probably gross pay- I've never heard anyone, when discussing their salaries or the salaries of jobs they are looking at, use net pay.

In the provinces in 1999, I signed a contract for 1,600,000....so 2,200,000 is still something I wouldn't get up to puke for, let alone work for. Mind you, if you sign one of those deals in the provinces today, you may do well. If you should sign one of those deals in Seoul, you have no excuse.

You guys would probably puke then if you were getting paid 1,800,000 a month in Busan? 25 hours a week, straight 5 hour shift. That's with having a B.Ed degree.
