I'm sitting in my class of usually-as-rowdy-as-dogs-on-heat first graders (middle school) and there is total silence. The other amazing factor is that their is no Korean teacher in the room. This is all down to the power of a particularly good wordsearch that I shamelessly downloaded from bogglesworld. I don't tend to use wordsearches that much, and have been discouraged to do so by one of my co-teachers. But today, I am giving thanks to the power of these wonderful tools! |

You can create your own at http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/
Word searches, crosswords and others. Great for keeping a room quiet when you have something that needs to get done. (like one on one work or individual testing) |

When I use wordfind puzzles, most of my middle schoolers copy off one another anyway -- they just don't get the idea of it being a fun activity > where FUN does not equal CHEATING. |

You can make wordsearches productive and creative in terms of language.
I have a generic, blank wordsearch. I just write in the topic and the kids make up the words, fill in the squares. When two are finished , I check for spelling (as I also do when walking around the class) and then give both of them the others at the same time. The race is on!!!! Great motivator.
Really works and the kids are learning spelling and creating and reinforcing the language they know. Not blindly looking for words/signs, they don't know the meaning of .....

When i give word searches, I like them to be part of a larger activity.
The worksheet will start with a vocabulary presentation(with pictures) followed by a matching exercise, followed by a word search and a crossword. Then, if time permits I have some fill in the blanks or answer the question thingys all using the same vocabulary and or topic area.
I don't like giving wordsearches on their own, unless I know the students already know most of the vocabulary.
One thing I like to do occasionally is make "sentence searches" .
I take 10 sample sentences from whatever lesson we are doing and squiggle them all into a word search box.
It takes a bit of imagination to fit them in sometimes, as I've had to change directions mid sentence or even mid-word. (but I try not to make them too difficult.
Anyway, that's my take on it. |

I use word searches quite a bit at the elementary schools I teach at. www.edhelper.com is a great one for this also. You do not have to join.
They make good crosswords too.
The kids really seem to enjoy them. I often use them at the end of a lesson for word revision, drilling the words on the list again before handing out the word search. |

Thanks Jewelz but I think the world goes around less by those who do and even more so by those who are kind. So your kind words go well with this mornings weak coffee -- they'll get me going!
Hope soon to have some kids songs up on the karaoke site. Been working on a bunch but takes time to produce each song....most are of the karaoke is geared for grade 5-6 and up....

What Jewelz said. I think web sites like yours are great. No fuss, no muss just helpful solutions and resources!
I use a lot of media in my classes. Most classes I will play a song or at least a part of a song, sometimes a short video clip and I always display pictures for the class to talk about. If you are like me I think it is a good idea to keep a word search in your back pocket for the time when the technology fails so completely that you will have time to fill at the end of class. |
