I think they should leave it separate. In fact, if I were in charge, I'd keep the liquor and gas taxes separate too.
Why? Because I don't think they should be there in the first place. If it were separate, people would be fully conscious that the twenty dollar bottle of vodka they want is forty because of taxes. And when they complain about the price of gas, they'd realize half of it is taxes.
It would outrage people, and maybe there would be enough protest to have those taxes (and others) revoked. |

So far this protest hasn't materialized on the products that do visibly carry the taxes, which is all of them.
I'm not interested in manufacturing outrage and protest. I'm interested in sanity at the register. However, best wishes with the "there should be no gas and liquor taxes in the first place" thing. |

The ten dollar bottle of vodka is forty; taxes on spirits in Canada are around 75%. Beer is around 50%. This is a reason for not hiding away the GST in the price; increases cannot be so easily hidden.

I don't want to pick on you for one issue, so I'll say my part and then agree to disagree with you. Eh?
It depends on the kind of tax cut and how big it is. Tax cuts can actually increase revenue for the state as productive activity increases. The way that Bush does cuts isn't the only way.
I think you will find that most mainstream economists would agree with the statement "corporate taxes in Canada are too high".
Thats it. Now back to how gays should marry and pot be smoked in public. |
Canada has one of the lowest taxes in the West. Its taxes are generally lower than the taxes seen in Western Europe. Canada has a budgetary surplus, the United States has a huge deficit. Part of that has to do with spending and not simply the tax cuts that were instituted. Canada has a smaller gap between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the country in comparison to its southern neighbour. Canadians have universal health care and some politicians may claim there would be a need to dismantle the system if one sees tax cuts.
As far as smoking pot, if you have had 44% of the population try cannibas sativa, then it does not make sense to have it on the books to where you can arrest someone for having a personal dose when the majority of people in B.C. tried the illegal substance, and not far from half tried in the rest of the country. Harper blocked the decriminilisation of marijuana.
When it comes to the gay issue, many Canadians supported same sex unions; they were divided on using the term marriage. However, they are, generally, not interested in revisiting the issue. It is politically small beer for Canadians. They are interested in what is happening in Afghanistan, peace-keeping, the economy, the environment, and health care.
Harper leads a minority government. I respect his intelligence, his respect for the armed forces, and he seems to be skilled when it comes to politics. Yes, he is an economist, but I am not sure about his economic philosophy if he was in control. As we all know one economist may something and another may say "On the other hand, you can do it this way". |

Harper is one of the best ministers so far. I hope he gets a majority next election.
And Rae was a twit. He tripled Ontario's debt did he not? |

If Harper got majority, the state and church would find themselves somewhat intertwined again, rights for gays and women would degrade, the country would go the way of America's current administration in terms of fiscal problems and repuation in the world, ... Luckily, I'm British too, Canada can go to hell and I have another option as it looks like Britian is pulling out of stupidity. Or I can atleast settle down in a smart, non-stupid-Christian run EU country.
I still believe the guy himself is more nutty in a Christian way than any of us have seen yet, whatever his strengths may be. That's what scares me.

Rae is a twit and will never be PM cause nobody in Ontario will ever vote for him. Iggy is just a member of the Canadian political and coporate and university elite, but he could win a government cause they are going to try and paint him as a new Tredeau (SP).
As for Harper, I can say that I don't like his party as its full of wingnutters like Jason Kenney (Mid 30's, single but hates gays hmmm.. me thinks you doth protest too much!) and Vic Taves and Doris Day and there is one really nutty bird from out in Saskatchewan whom I cant even remember.
But aside from the nutters, he has kept his word for the most part, unlike the Fiblerals, who lied like dogs all the time. As for the gay marriage, since I plan on getting one sometime, he knows he will lose the vote (even if he did win the vote the SC would overturn it, thank god!) but he is going to hold it to keep the wingnutters happy, smart play. |

I agree with your 1st and 3rd paragraph (although not with the term wingnutters).
I think that's the first time we've actually agreed on something. |

| Thanks, I was just watching the news from Tuesday (thank god for public school jobs!!!!!) and they were talking about the Conservative plan to make convicts prove they are not dangerous offenders rather than having the Crown prove they are. While I'm not sure it will survive a charter challenge I do like the idea that we will be keeping rapists behind bars indefinitly! I know that some on this board will disagree with this cause in the past this place has seemed very pro-rape (just look back on some of the threads for proof of that) but it seems to me to be a good thing for women, children and all of Canada really. |

I am still trying to get over this board's opinion on that 25 year old woman who molested her 14 year old student! |

| Little to know chance that the Conservatives will form a majority in the next election. Latest poll shows them tied nationally with the Liberals. Liberals are leading in Ontario and the Conservatives have nose dived into Quebec in large part to their hawkish foreign policy. |

Which thread? Got a link? The ages in the article you linked yesterday were 36 and 17, so it can't be that one.. |
