A friend believes you must give notice if you intend not to re-sign your contract. I think notice only applies to leaving a contract early: comments?

There is no "need" to, but I would let them know atleast a month in advance if they think you are going to resign.

If you're not going to re-sign then doing nothing is okay, but let them know few weeks in advance that you will be moving on so that they don't forget about paying your severance.

Common sense and common courtesy would prevail here. Just advise them that you are not staying on and that they need to find new staff. Smile

Some contracts have a clause about one or both parties giving notice ____ weeks / months in advance before the contract expires. Mine says two months in advance. Of course, since no one at my school but me has actually read my contract it came as a bit of a surprise to them to get a letter of intention from me two months before renewal time.

Wouldn't the question come up naturally a few weeks before the end of the contract? I would think the owner or principal of the school would want to know if they should be looking for a new teacher.

I would let them approach you. Your contract is a year long. They can assume all they want that you are going to stay, but if you don't agree to it they can't make you stay. If you want to be really nice, I'd wait until your second to the last payday and then tell them. That will give them 4 weeks. It should be plenty of time to find a new teacher if it's a decent job (I don't know if it is or isn't).

Let's be careful with that one word. It can lead to confusion.

"Resign" means quit.

"Re-sign" means stay another year.

How about "renew."

Good. No confusion there.
