Hi,
I need some professional advice. I wanted to clarify a few questions with my hagwon boss today...
- she announced that b/c she paid upfront my airfare that she is withholding the return ticket price during my second pay cheque and she would return it if I completed my contract ???
- I asked her to put it in writing and that was certainly not in the contract, she said she wanted to protect herself from me leaving all of a sudden
- she also said I have to pay up to 8% taxes and since I have a child I do not pay 10%
I really need some advice here...
Due to the extreme unruly elementary school kids and her complete appeasement to them, some of my classes are so out of control... (earplug material) She does'nt want to lose anymore students.
I do feel like leaving the damn place sometimes for the mentioned reasons and other reasons; I have TESL Canada training and teaching experience in the field from Canada, is this worth 2 mill won for 25hr classroom hours a week!!!
Any of your professional advice would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks everyone,
J

Even if it was agreed to term in your contract (in your case it wasn't)withholding any of your pay is illegal according to the Korean Labor Law.
If you were making 2.0 million, the tax rate should be less than 2%. I think it's 1.8 or 1.5.
It seems that you landed on a crappy hagwon job and you will most likely run into more problems as you go along. If you have not gotten your visa yet, I suggest you to start looking for a better job. Once you get your first month's pay, I would bail out of there. |

In that case, you're basically SOL. They own you if you stay in Korea so you have following options:
1. Get paid and just pack up your stuff and go back home (assuming you have the round trip ticke).
2. Gamble! after you get paid, tell your boss that you decide to leave tomorrow and go back home because you will not accept their illegal act(violation of labor law) of holding your pay for any reason. And the only way that you're willing to stay with the school is if they honor your contract and the labor law. Maybe, your boss will back-off knowing that she'll lose business and $ hiring new teacher. If not, do #1.
3. Accept what they say and stay with the school and hope you don't get screwed.
I wish I can give you better advice, but that's all I can do. I hope someone else here can also offer you better advice. |

If it's not in the contract, they cannot take *beep* out of your paycheck. And if they do, take it to the labor board. That contract is your bible for the next year. They will stick you for every word, and you should stick it to them as well!! That may actually mean they are breaking your contract, although that doesn't nessecarily mean you can quit because of that. Make these things known to the labor board or to your immigration office. |
