Korea "proudly proclaims" itself to be many things. Shame no one outside of Koreans believe the hype. |

The Pyongyang exception
One unique aspect of Seoul's foreign aid situation is that its contributions to one country in particular -- North Korea... "Still, money going to the North is coming from the same taxpayers' pockets, so in the end there is less money to be used for foreign aid."

I don't know about the rest of Asia, but when I lived in Hanoi, Korea seemed pretty influential. People seemed genuinely impressed that I'd lived in Seoul, and everyone liked making jokes about how I must have liked it because Korean women were so beautiful. Vietnamese singers ripped off tunes from Korean pop (which were probably ripped off from somewhere else), everyone watched Korean soap operas daily, and so on and so on. |

One of the K-teachers I work with told me on friday that Kimchi is now a world food...
I told her that before i had came to Korea(and I had lived in japan and been all over Asia) I had never heard of Kimchi and nobody i knew had ever mentioned it...
She seemed genuinely shocked and that i was lying or trying to make her angry....

No problem with all that being true and Korea still being a rising cultural power and trendsetter. Just tell the K-teacher that it's thanks to her and her fellow (wrong word?) world-class K-hawties that Korea's managed to achieve the level of global prominence and prestige it has. Kimchi, sure, lots of waegooks will never like it. No problem. In the end, though, kimchi's just a dish you throw on the table and eat, whereas K-hawties.... uh... let me rephrase that. |
