so i was sitting on the subway, headphones on, tuning out the world. it was saturday night, and the train was mostly empty (i live in the boonies, ya know). suddenly there was the sound of someone wailing away. either they were having the best or the worst time of their life, at the top of their lungs. initially i thought it was my music, so i hit mute, but no, the screams continued. i couldn't see anything going on, and no one else was really reacting, all plugged into their machines. it just kept going on and on and on... people started to look around, it seemed to be coming from the gap between the cars. i really thought someone was either being butchered or having very good subway sex.
suddenly, this face pops up in the window of the door connecting the cars, i have never seen a more maniacal grin than this kid wore. it was a boy, around 12ish, and he was the screamer. he opened the door, shouted out something to the lot of us, and went back to between the doors. he smushed his face up against the window and just stared at everyone, with this huge scary grin on his face. after a few minutes (during which i would suruptitiously peek over to see if he was still there while trying to avoid eye-contact, just like everyone else), he went through the doors to the other side, and recommenced his screams/laughter.
some new people got on, a couple of women with little girls, and he eventually came back. as soon as he walked back through the door, his eyes lit on the girls and he opened his mouth to howl again... but! a young guy gave him the eye and pointed a finger at him. not a word was spoken, but this kid got the message. he went back between the doors and continued his screams, didn't come back into our car. the whole episode lasted about 15 minutes.
the best part is that the kid was wearing a t-shirt that said "end of strange"
perhaps he was making a statement....

Was he stocky and grubby? were you on line 1? I've seen a strange kid with a huge, permanent grin on his face doing the rounds on the subway, just getting on and off random stops. He followed me once and I gave him chewing gum...cute kid actually. Obviously neglected, probably doesnt go to school.

His smile got my attention~
