It's a repeat of the 1968 matchup. Nice to have an all-midwest Series. But I have to admit I'm disappointed in having to choose between a team that won only 83 games in the regular season and a wild card team.
I'm picking Tigers in 5. |

OMG I can't watch this annhilation anymore. 7-1 Cards top of the sixth. The Tigers look like a bunch of Pop Warner kids throwing away the ball, making mistakes all over the place. Let's hope they get all the mistakes out of their system this game. Still a chance for Tigers in 5 but they need to make some major adjustments-quickly |

Well, two people (besides flotsam) are wrong already. I figure the Tigers have got it out of their system and will make me look good by winning the next four in a row (hope, hope, hope!). |

While that is definitely true, I am pleased that the two teams with the 11th highest and 14th highest payroll in the MLB are able to make it the Series. It at least gives the illusion of parity. Especially since both teams had to go through the Yankees and Mets, and their league leading payrolls, to get to the Series.
**Cardinals in 6**

Depends on how many times Rogers pitches. Nice matchup in Game 2 Monday morning.
Anyone else having difficulty with the traffic on TVU while watching the playoffs? Seems FOX is not available during these times.
This is definitely the Cards year. Although I'm usually a Redbird hater and more of a fan of their cross-state rival, I'd hafta agree that they got robbed in 2004 and that they are about due. Hope they aren't another Buffalo.

We now interrupt your regularly scheduled thread so I can ask:
why is it called the World Series? It's basically just the US, and a couple Canadian teams. |

Because it is the most important event in the world. Ever. Every year. Always. So there. |

The "World" appellation has stuck despite the fact that only teams in the two major leagues, which happen to cover only the United States and Toronto, Canada, actually participate. At the time the term was first used, baseball at the major league level was played only in the United States. While some would contend that there is no reason to believe that the World Series winner is a significantly better team than any club team outside Major League Baseball, no challenges have been made by other leagues in the last ninety years. Moreover, virtually all the best international players from the Pacific Rim, Latin America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere play on Major League rosters, with the notable exception of Cuban nationals, due to the political situation between the USA and Cuba (and even despite this barrier, many of Cuba's finest ballplayers have defected to the United States to play in the American professional leagues).
A persistent myth is that the "World" in "World Series" came about because the New York World newspaper sponsored it. Baseball researcher Doug Pappas refutes that claim, demonstrating a linear progression from the phrase "World's Championship Series" (used to describe the 1903 series as well as some of the 19th-century postseason series) to "World's Series" (a term first used in the 1880s and which persisted for decades) to "World Series". Furthermore, investigation of the New York World for the relevant years revealed no evidence of the supposed sponsorship. |

I voted "Tigers in 7" after knowing they lost the opener. I would have picked them to win in 6. But, after I voted, I noticed that no one has picked St. Louis to win in 7, and that's a very probable outcome now, I think... |

OK Tigers are back on track. 3-1 Rogers was incredible again. That bozo Jones who replaced him in the 9th almost cost him the game though.
All my classes between 9 and 1 are cancelled til this baby's over |
