I need to explain the word nerd. It's not really part of the slang used from my part of the world. Can anyone give a good definition? |

nerd - bookish, intelligent, socially awkward
geek - socially awkward and into cult things, e.g. D&D, Star Trek, computers, etc.
dork - socially awkward and annoying, less intelligent than a nerd and more annoying than a geek |

most korean students....
intellectual, not good at sports, usually wears glasses, dorky clothes/uniforms..
When I asked my grade school students if they'd rather be friends with the funny, good soccer player, or the smart kid in class, they all chose the smart kid....
So, to us, nerd is a derogatory comment...To Koreans, what it represents/describes isn't negative, so the word 'nerd' loses its power...
I think it might be impossible to accurately describe what it means - definitively and socially - to a country like Korea, where studying is emphasized over everything else.

Responses above pretty much cover it. I think the korean word is hock-o-paw. It can be taken as an insult or a compliment.
Essentially a nice person, a good person to know, but maybe not take to parties. For that reason, they're always home on Fridays and you can call them up if you need some arcane knowledge. |

Yep, Koreans don't think of "nerd" as derogatory.
I guess playing up the part about lacking social skills would help them understand.
I always just say "Bill Gates"-
rich- heck yeah; smart- yep; good looking- no way; smooth with the ladies- not likely; everybody liked and admired him when he was in school- very, very unlikely! |

At a certain level of accomplishment, one leaves the "nerd" mantle behind. Therefore, I am not a nerd, I am an intellectual with ties to the common man. Although I do appreciate your continued attempts at social climbing by associating yourself with me.
You speak to computers as if they were people and think your avatar pics are edgy. Therefore you are certainly a nerd.
Derrek wasn't a "nerd". To the other end of the spectrum, once one has devolved to a certain level of infamy, and has suggested picking up high school girls in Monkey Beach, one is no longer a nerd. There is another name for it.
Not that being a nerd is a very bad thing, when balanced with other traits. Perhaps that's what happens at certain level of diversity of talent and genius, such as I display: Renaissance Nerd. |

This rare photo of "flotsam" when he still had some hair pretty much personifies the concept:

Well, there's your definition right there! If you post like this, you are a bona fide, true blue, down home, solid gold, unrepentant, unreconstructed, honest to goodness, thoroughbred nerd ... |

The institution, son. The institution. I mean, you and Rteacher are right about on par in JPNA statistics, so I can see your interest in keeping tabs on the stats of the others. Including those of us in the RPNA.
You might get there one day, but it's going to take development of certain secondary and tertiary skills that you have neglected until now. Dedication is key, son. Dedication.
Viel Gluck! |
