Does anyone know where I can find anything in Daechi? I just arrived in South Korea yesterday and woke up in my apartment after a jetlag induced nap to find that it's 3 in the morning. Someone is picking me up to start training at school on Monday, so I have the rest of Sunday to explore and hopefully pick up a few things for my apartment. I wish there were street names in Korea. Someone from the school already introduced me to the area and bought me some juice and water at 7-11, but the familiar areas are starting to blend together.
The things I would really like to get are an adapter for my laptop (36% battery and dying) and possibly some groceries. Also, if you live in the area and wouldn't mind meeting a new teacher, let me know. |

Up until a few weeks ago I could have directed you to Gangnam Walmart in Daechi but it has been taken over by E-Mart now. It will still have most of what you need.
Get in a taxi and try, "E-Mart-uh, ka-say-oh". If he looks puzzled just get out and maybe try another taxi. It won't be far from where you live and will probably only be 2000 won. |

Make sure you know how to direct another taxi back to your house...
There's also a Lotte department store right next to Hanti station. They have (or at least two years ago they had) a grocery section in the basement. |

Thanks for the advice. The Lotte store is now the only place I can consistently find. I went there today but it was closed. I'm not sure if it's closed because it's Sunday or because I went there at 10 am because I couldn't sleep any more. I checked the website, but it didn't post hours. Any idea when/if it opens?
I feel a lot more comfortable knowing how to get from a subway station to my apartment. Before I was going by the landmark of the 7-11 on the corner and quickly realized that wasn't a smart move. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably try looking for it tomorrow before training starts. I went out before I got this message looking for a grocery store and ended at the COEX mall. It wasn't a very pleasent walk back in the rain to Lotte and then my apartment.
I wish I could find an English map. |

Here's an English map.
Also, mess around with this and you can find the bus routes for anywhere in Seoul and area. When you find a tourist information center you can get a free map of Seoul in English to carry around. I still use the one I got 5 years ago.....on occasion. |

| If you live near Hanti station, PM me because that's the area that I live in. I can also help out. Do you know if your school will have other foriegners? If they do, then they'll be able to help orient you. |

I'll look for a tourist information center tomorrow. Unfortunately, the map you sent won't load on my laptop. Damn you Macintosh. |

I had to laugh at this. It brought back memories of my first few weeks here. I navigated to school by remembering to turn left at the women's clothing shop where the mannikin was wearing a red dress. On about my third day they changed her dress. I got so lost I nearly ended up in North Korea. |

That's hilarious. I'm glad I'm not the only person suffering stupid forienger syndrome. |

Nope. At the time of my escapade, I was living in Taejon but now I'm in a little burg just outside Seoul.

I think I have enough stupid foreigner stories to qualify for permanent membership in the club. Possibly my worst one: Last year I went out for supper and happened to see some nice orchid plants in a flower shop. I thought, 'A-ha!' and went in. Spent maybe 20 minutes trying to get the ajumma to tell me how much sunlight and water they needed. She just refused to understand. Just refused. It was very frustrating. I finally gave up and left. Outside I pinched a leaf of my new orchid plant. It was plastic.
On the other hand, it can pay to play the Stupid Foreigner Card at times. Don't over do it, but do keep it in your repertoire of dealing with foreign cultures strategies. |
