Well our city had a bit of a shock as one of our few foreigners was found dead in his apartment. It has been in the local news (as i have been told as i don't understand korean) as he died of a heart attack but it is speculated that leaving his fan on had something do with it..."fan death"...have you ever heard of anything more ridiculous??

Im very sorry about your friends death.

We must all remember that fan death is a very serious problem. Korea has been labled a 'Fan Death Red Zone' but the Intercontinental Assosiation for Korean Safety and Refridgerator Maintenance...the only such red zone in the world. Research is currently underway to discover what it is exactly that causes fan death, or if fan death exists at all. This research is being conducted by The Korean Corporation for Fan Death, Ball Bearings, and Antique Revolvers, or the KCFDBBAR. Current research indicates that fan death is almost, but not quite as dangerous as walking on a floor covered with ball bearings, and definatly not as dangerous as a loaded antique revolver. But fan death is still a serious problem, says lead researcher Kim Seong Ung. He estimates, that unless another unreasonable death form is found, fan death could skyrocket, especially if the current global warming trend continues. 'We are in grave trouble,' said Kim.

Im not making light of his death. The man asked if we have ever 'heard of anything more ridiculous.' I haven't. I think I made that clear in my post. I am very sorry for his friends death and I in no way intended to make light of it. Im sorry if my post is viewed that way.

It probably is a little bad timingish, and Im sorry for that, but this is really an absurd reason for death. I was just trying to point that out without saying something dry like 'Yes, fan death is nuts.'
I wonder how they determine that this person or that person has died of fan death.
I wonder if its an old wives tale told so that Korean kids don't leave their fans on at night and waste electricity.
We need to do a study to find the origin of fan death...

I figured it out!!! Its a myth started by the air conditioner companies! So ban the fan, buy this nice, new, cuddly, not-so-dangerous air conditioner instead. Yes, thats it.

I asked my kids today if they had heard of "fan death", They said ofcourse...i just laughed i was like "how the hell are these people educated" perhaps i was missing something?
After further questioning i got two emphatic answers
1. "all the air gets sucked out of the room"
2. "You get your fingers stuck and bleed to death!"
later in the day a kid just wouldn't shut up so i threatened to point the fan at him!

I read the owner's manual for a Samsung fan and it has a warning about using a fan in a closed room overnight. It says that the action of a fan in a closed room over a number of hours does something to the air that can be dangerous to toddlers and old people. The explanation sounded reasonable and not overblown like the warnings you hear from some people about the 'fan deathtrap'. I don't know how much research has been done about what a fan does to the air in a closed room but it might be interesting to check it out.
