				| Sometimes I get a bit bitter about Korea and Koreans but the one then something nice comes along that puts a smile on my face.
Today my city of 100,000 had their second 'foreign culture festival.' There were stalls from Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Phillipines and Mongolia out selling goods and food. It was raining and cold but I saw many of my students (both current and former) out volunteering at the festival, speaking english with people from all over Asia and enjoying some genuine Indian curry.

So to all the bashers, yes korea has a long way to go. But little stuff like this shows that they perhaps Koreans aren't so xenophobic as many of us think they are.

				| Most of the thing people complain about in Korea are small things.
Koreans are not bad people. When i feel like ditching this country the feeling usually goes away after about two hours.

I've only been here a year tho.

				| You could go to a festival, check out food, talk to some people, and still hold xenophobic attitudes about them, quite easily. Xenophobia doesn't have to mean outright antipathy, it can mean any kind of predjudice, stereotype, or bigottry. | |

Unless you're talking about Big Trouble in Little China, that is. Get with the program, you two.

Kind of like the attitudes that many male English teachers (on this board at least) have towards Korean men in general?

No, I think given Junior's personality that 'slither' is the correct word for him.

				| I think that events like this are important. Attitudes don't change overnight and given Korea's relatively short history of immigration these sort of things are important stepping stones for Koreans. A lot of the xenophobia comes from ignorance, so events like these go along way to helping shift attitudes far more than any legislation could. | |
