| I don't worry a nanosecond about what Americans say or think about Canadians. A Canadian passport opens doors, it puts smiles on people's faces, and makes people say words like 'welcome' and 'pleased to meet you' and 'come on in'. |
Canadians! when people say you are acting gay this would be a perfect example of it! If there was a class on how not to act like gay Canadians this would be in the textbook. Nobody gives a shat where you are from! They really dont, but if you start acting gay thinking because of your passport or putting your flag on your backpack gives you street cred you will continue the stereotype that all Canadians suffer from the little man syndrome. And if you really want people to treat you like the above quote start tipping more than 5% and you might get better service. |

This Canadian happens to agree with you.
What I think (and it is just my opinion) is that previous generations of Canadians did travel around the world and get better treatment than Americans. Not sure why they were treated better, but they just were. It seems to me that those Canadians of my parents' generation, through their behavior perhaps, earned the 'better' treatment, while the current generation of Canadians has come to simply EXPECT better treatment. Earning it isn't even an issue.
It could even be that Canadians have NEVER behaved better than Americans while aboraod, and that the preferred treatment for Canadians was more a subtle example of anti-Americanism than any sort of favoritism towards Canadians.
Not sure where we got the rep for being bad tippers though...I've always oprated on the 15% rule, but often go to 20% for very good service. Perhaps the Quebecois? |

I think he made it up. Doesn't pretty much everybody work on the 15-20% rule? |

Whenever someone asks me where I am from I say Vancouver. I have found this usually gets a more positive reaction than Canada because after all most people who know about it think that it is the most beautiful city in the world.

Back in the day I waited tables and there was a rap about Canucks being cheapskates. Im not sure where it came from but it was pretty prevalent in places where Canadians vacationed (Virginia Beach, Florida). Youre probably right; you guys probably do tip the same. It would be interesting to see where it got its start.
BTW - 15% is ok but Id say 20-25% in a big city. |

Taking the general actions and views of young people to represent a country and it's people is never a good idea. If we wanted to use that to judge people, I can think of two examples while being on vacation. I was in Prague and in a restaurant/pub one evening. The service was crap, like totally crap. Anyways, the couple beside us were upset about the service and the girl got up to complain. Her exact words, "I deserve better service, I'm an American."
The other time was when I was working in a small produce grocery store while in high school. We get lots of tourists and Americans are among them. We used to rent out the big water jugs and people had to pay a deposit on the dispenser part of the jugs. People were always pissed when they had to pay the deposit, but they had to. One particular person, an American, when told they would have to pay a deposit, responded with "I'm an American, I don't have to do it."
This is just in response to the "some Canadians expect better treatment" quote. I think 'some' people from Western countries believe that they deserve better treatment because they think they are important, when in reality, nobody gives a rat's ass about them. There are plenty of Canadians like this too. Point is, there is no point in trying to judge Canadians or Americans by the few Canadians, or the few Americans you meet. It is no different than the people on here that hate Korea because one person stared at them. Half of my friends here are American, and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between them and my Canadian friends, except for their die hard passion for football. Actually, one guy I thought was from Ontario for over a year, turns out he was from Buffalo. |

| Just one more thing about the tipping. Just because you tip more, doesn't mean people like you more. It just means they will be nicer because they want your money. |

Yes, but look closely at that picture. Notice something? THERE ARE NO PEOPLE IN THE PHOTO.
Vancouver's actually empty. It's like the neutron bomb went off, removing the people but leaving the buildings.
This is because everyone from Vancouver is spread out all over the world, from Halifax to Dublin to Kangnam, telling everyone they meet that Vancouver is much more beautiful than wherever they are. |

I guess your eyes are better than mine if you can see people in a photo that was taken from a helicopter500 m above the city and if that's the case WTF did it take me 40 minutes to drive 5 km to work today? |

Saying your city is the most beautiful is just as stupid as anything else. Even if it is the most beautiful, how is that in anyway connected to the person saying it? And why did you leave then |

Just curious. Has anyone besides me ever had a total stranger walk up and start a conversation with a version of any of those? |

With American players. How many Canadians were on the two Jays teams that won? One?

b) won the War of 1812!"

This one has been done to death. In short...No, we didn't. Canada didn't exist until 1867. If anything, the British won the War of 1812, and even that is open to debate.

See above about no Canada until 1867. Also, while it was torched, it was not burned down. Finally, it was called the White House prior to its torching, so it is not called the White House because it was painted white to cover up damage caused by 'Canadians'. Canadians also forget to mention that the Americans had burned down the Town of York (now Toronto).

Canada is one of the most highly taxed nations in the world. It isn't free. And it's going broke.
| Quote: |
e) invented the telephone!"

The phone was 'invented' by a Scot who may (or may not) have been livng in Canada at the time he invented it. At any rate, he probably wasn't the inventor of the telephone, and the US Congress agrees. They finally recognized Italian immigrant Antonio Meucci as the inventor of the telephone. |

Again 1,2 and 3, blah. 4, I still think it's also the idea of offering free medical services to everyone. We are heavily taxed, but no one goes without healthcare, even bums on the street, even if they have to wait (and almost never if you really need it)
For 5, while I totally agree, you do see the problem with telling a Canadian that actually brought that up that the US Congress says so would just be funny |
