Are there any Aussies here who've had kids with ROK spouses? We're expecting our first in March and intend to obtain Aussie citizenship for the young 'un. The embassy and immigration websites seem a little vague with their information about this. It'd be helpful if someone who's actually been there done that could give me a few tips and suggestions.

Cheers.

My wife is Aussie (kyopo) and I'm Canadian. I don't know that the nationality of your wife would matter, really, but all it took for us was a trip to the Aussie embassy with birth certificate of the child (in English), a marriage certificate (can't remember whether that mattered or not...), pictures of the child, Aussie citenzenship proof of a parent and filling out a few forms + pay some cash. A few weeks later, the citizenship papers were ready.

Oh yeah, and the pictures of your child must conform to the specifications/guidelines very precisely. Another Aussie friend of mine got his rejected and had to get new pics made and go back...

You can visit the embassy before the big event and get the paperwork ready beforehand, too. There was a young Korean-looking Aussie guy working the window at the embassy who was really friendly and helpful.

May I also suggest you get at least half a dozen English birth certificates, because it seems we've needed one for a few things. Just get your doctor to stamp each one and you should be good to go.

Congrats on getting one past the goalie! Smile

I regestered my daughter as an Australian citizen earlier this year. It is a simple process. All you need to do is get an English copy of the child's birth certificate, complete a Form 118 Form - Application for registration of Australian citizenship by descent, have your Aussie birth certificate or passport, and send the Aussie government $110.
You can get all the info and download the form 118 on this link.

http://www.southkorea.embassy.gov.au/seol/descent.html

Be sure to check the official exchange rate on the Australian Government website or phone the embassy as it is different to the real rate (about $20 more when I did it). You will then need to go to the post office and get a Giro money order for that amount in Korean won.

Put all of this in an envelope and mail it to the Australian Embassy, KPO Box 562, Seoul 110-605, Korea

And you are done...
Your childs new Citizenship Certificate will come in the mail a couple of weeks later.
I didn't need pictures or anything like that and didn't even visit the embassy.
Hope this helped...any more questions, send me a PM.[/url]

That's right, I forgot about the money order thing. If you do go to the embassy, there's a bank across the street from the Kyobo Building (where the embassy is located) that has an updated fee list from the embassy. Pay your money, get the money order and you're all good.
