I'm currently in the US but planning to come to Seoul to teach. I saw the thread about the teacher scandal and was wondering if it really is that easy to get girls in Korea? Are you treated like a Hollywood star like the article said?
I'm not asking because I want to be (honestly!), I was just wondering because I heard that Korea is nothing like Japan in that sense. In fact, I've been told that finding girlfriends is quite difficult due to racism, etc.
Any opinions? |

We are all competing for the same subset of Korean women who speak english, who are not afraid to speak english, want to defy their parents wishes and date a whitey, and who would view a hagwon teacher versus say a young Samsung exec as a perfectly acceptable life mate, a man who will take her back to North America where her English won't seem nearly as good as it seems in Korea and she might have to spend the next ten years working in a Korean restaurant instead of the marketing department at LG.
Insert your chances.
A good rule of thumb, however, if you've had something to offer women back at home, you'll have something to offer them here and you'll do okay. |

There are a fair number of Koreans who are fairly Westernised and therefore easy to get along with and have a relationship with. Not all girls here are going against their parents wishes by having a Western boyfriend. It's just a case of finding the right one, and consequently it's not "that" much different than how it would be at home. |

Sure, but back home you can communicate with nearly all of them. Here as one of the previous posters said we are competing for a subset of them and when we go out we go to certain areas only where that subset could also be found, with their (girls) questionable motives. Sure, a few out of a bunch are genuine, but....things are different than at home. |

to contribute more to the thread... dating in Korea kinda feels like you're back in high school. You don't have a car, your girlfriend is (acts?) virginal, and her parents expect her home by 10pm. If that sounds like Hollywood stardom, then yes. |

Yeah man, I'm forever getting asked for autographs, getting given designer clothes.
There are even paparazzi outside my window trying to get photos of me as I sit here in my t-shirt, socks and nothing else.

Indeed. So long as you don't mind sharing you'll be ok. These girls usually have several foreign guys in their phonebook at any one time.
If you speak korean you have a superhuman advantage, but you have to be superhuman to learn their babble in the first place. It ain't easy like French... |

Thats why most of the English-speaking Korean women who hang out in the foreigner areas are passed around like joints at a Dead concert.. |

Interesting analogy, but I think the difference is when you pass around a joint, you know full well that others have been smoking it.
With these 'open minded' Korean girls, a lot of the time I don't think the white guy realises that the girl has been around the block once or 80 times.
"Oooh, I've never been with a foreigner before.." hmmm |

While I suppose it's true that the racial/ethnic/nationality factor plays a role in dating either subtly or blatantly everywhere on the planet, I guess how attractive you are as an individual rather than one that belongs to a certain ethnic/cultural group is all that matters 'in the end.' My 'subset' is quite small here, too. But I realized it doesn't matter much. Chances, the odds, statistical sense, etc. These are all useless when it comes to meeting someone special. It's not like my goal is to have less than 2 failures out of 1000 products in the manufacturing process. |

When we western male teachers are in our home country, females don't notice us because we are just ordinary distractions that, in the eyes of said females, are just environmental "filler." I'm talking about "filler" as being similar to the type of song that comes between the top forty songs on a cd. We're just there to take up space and mildly entertain people or be ignored.
In Korea, we are amongst strangers, people who associate us with their own preconceptions of western society, which have been fed by Hollywood. After living in Korea for a little while, we realize our potential and try to make a connection in the Asian females' minds between ourselves and those popular western celebrities. As we master this craft, which most of us are able to do to an extent, we are able to mask our bald heads, our love handles, lack of style, poor grooming habits, and inability to dance or fully function socially. Our middle school humor is overlooked because of language barriers, and we get away with a lack of manners because "we're western."
The only people who can see through this are other foreigners and enlightened Koreans, aka, those who have lived abroad for at least a few years. It's almost as if they have a rune of deception to counteract your invisibility cloak. When we meet or see these people, we are exposed. Our eyes widen with paranoia; we observe each other skeptically. At any moment, one of these whistleblowers could call us out on our pitiful game, easily shooting down our "Making Out in Korean" phrases with "-imnida and -imnikka" words we could only dream of wholly comprehending. Upon that realization, we slide into shock and freeze up. We avoid foreigners, preferring the company of Koreans that are oblivious to the sham. In essence, we become xenophobic against our own people! We don't say "Hello" on the streets, opting instead to look at imaginary gum that we just stepped on.
Well, I'm sure there are some, possibly many guys like that, and people such as Alyssa and others would lead you to believe that. In my case though, I may not be perfect, but I still get white chicks hot and bothered. Like my friend's wife's friend Lindsey, a hot blonde from California whom everyone calls "dump truck" in reference to the buttocks that protrude from her petite frame literally like bubbles. Or that girl from Canada.
While I'm on a tangent, I may as well mention that these threads often devolve into the type of rhetoric (if you can even call it that) that I've just begun treading into. Eventually, we start talking about how these threads devolve into these types of threads. Arguments and flaming posts ensue. We become disillusioned with Dave's. In the end though, we all like to post and live and work together like a community. That's how we can always pick these threads out as being "typical" or "one of these ones."
There's a kind of deeply rooted desire to hear stories of some guy who pulled 10,000 females in these types of threads. The guy who went to the car show and was escorted by two racing girls to a love motel. A guy who went to Hongdae and had his nether regions tongued by a bevy of freshman girls with shiny MLB brand jackets and Kangol Windsor hats. The guy who tutored illegally and was paid with a membership card to the "secret room" of a business club.
It's sick, and digs deep to the core carnal instincts of male English teachers... |
