If an American citizen who is teaching in Korea gets charged with a crime, does that criminal record follow you back to America?
I have heard that it does, but I want to hear your thoughts since I cannot read gov't websites in Korean about Korean law.
Say you get convicted, does the Korean gov't call up the American embassy in Korea and tell them of the situation, then *bam*, you suddenly see your American record tainted with the crime you committed in Korea. Does that happen?

It does not follow you in that way.
It will NOT appear on a criminal or background check done in the states.
Many countries, if you plan to take up residence, do require a criminal background checks to be done in every country that you have resided in for a period of more than 6 months. |

It will only follow you IF the korean cops send your finger prints to the FBI. As in the U.S..... ALL those arrested for a felony and some minor charges get their finger prints sent to the FEDS.
If you are deported, korean immigration DOES inform CIS (Customs and Immigration Service/Homeland Security) of the deportation and they enter you into the data base which is now shared with ALL federal agencies. Before it was only the FBI, but that changed a few months ago and one central clearing house keeps all the info for all to access.
If one needs a passport....the passport office checks with the data base for any arrest warrants...even the embassy in Seoul checks. If one owes child support...they catch them also....again, if they are listed in the data base. |
