I just renewed my F2-1 visa for the second year. I confirmed that I can apply for my F5 after I have been in Korea with an F2-1 for a total of 24 months.

What they did was make my renewed F2-1 visa valid for two years not one. This means that while I am processing my F5 visa (12 months from now) I don't have worry about my F2-1 visa expiring.

When you renew your F2-1 visa ask them to make it valid for 2 not 1 year.

I applied for my F-5 visa about 6 weeks ago. I went into immigration on the day my F-2 expired. The officer processed my application and said that it would take 2-6 months to process and that I didn't have to renew my F-2. I asked her to check with someone else if this was true because I thought that I would have to renew the F-2 visa. She checked with a few other officers, gave me a receipt to say that my F-5 was being processed and sent me on my way. They told my wife that while the F-5 was being processed, a renewal of the F-2 was not necessary. Since that date, I financed a new car and got a credit card. When they wanted to see my ARC, I just flashed my receipt and all was good.

I applied for my F5 on the 22nd of August. An official interviewed my wife and I in our house. He only talked to my wife, then called her later asking about me, whether I can speak Korean or not etc.

We had to provide the usual stuff plus prove of sufficient funds. My wife had to complete a guarantee form and fax it in.

I got my new id card with F5 on the front and nothing on the back exactly 7 weeks later.

I went in today to apply for my F5.

The lady at the desk spoke to me for a minute then told me I do not speak enough Korean to qualify so it looks like I will stay on an F2 unless I take a Korean conversation class. Crying or Very sad

That sucks man!! Maybe you could try another person there or a different office. I was sweating a bit when the desk woman gave me a big form to fill out and asked if I could read it!
