|
|
I have an open class coming up soon and I have to choose a song for the class to sing. My co-teacher wants to sing songs like 'This Old Man' or "Mary had a Little Lamb' because 'they are easy'.
However, I feel that they are too old for this kind of stuff.
Anyone know anything more appropriate? |

| I think Mary Had a Little Lamb would be an insult to your abilities if you used it! At that age, kids are already keen on all the current pop heartthrobs. However, for 'safety', you could go for the obvious Beatles or Abba or Simon&Garfunkel classics. Many of the parents will enjoy these songs, too. There are some links on my site below under 'song' for further ideas on using songs in the classroom. |

Cecelia (Change some of the lyrics)
My Love
Yesterday
Let it be
YMCA
Three little birds
The thing with these songs is that you have to actually TEACH them it. Line by line week by week as some of the words are tricky, but it's well worth it in my opinion and looks spectacular tro the korean observers in open classes, even better, learn the songs on guitar and strum away with the kids. |

How about some memorable "camp songs" like "Quartermaster Store"? Ex. There are rats, rats, as big as alley cats, blah, blah. Try a search on google for Quartermaster+lyrics and you will get the Boy Scout list of Camp Songs.
Or the cheer song - "Every where we go, people want to know; Who we are, who we are? So we tell them, so we tell them. We are Daejeon, mighty, mighty Daejeon! etc. Also on Boy Scout list.
I did this with Grade 5 (high ability) and Grade 6 students (very low ability). I tell students these are camp/bus songs to drive the teachers/drivers crazy because they are never-ending. I tried it last week with 3 classes and it was a great success - I judge success with the fact that after the first class (intro), the students were humming it at lunch time.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps - and it is age appropriate |

Hello Goodbye (Beatles)
Why is it that every elementary school KET thinks they have to put in a song and role-plays into their demo lesson ??? |

Try some karaoke, some of the songs on my website.....I'd go for HUG, sung by Dong Bang Shin Gi in English. Students already know the Korean version and it would inspire them to see the group singing and using English so well (well, atleast decently enough). Get a stereo , pop in a mic and you are set after downloading the song....

sing alongs...row row row ur boat...and different groups chime in
kinda fun that way...for any song like that
karaoke is fun also...everyone likes to be a comic...get them up to say jokes or something ..funny...does not have to be singing....per se |

I should have mentioned. They are 5th grade public elementary students. The class are quite good at English and the above songs are far too easy for them. |

That alladin song "I can show you the world".
Separate the boys and girls and have the boys sing the boy part and the girls sing the girl part. |
