don't know about your Gillian Welch suggestion Khyber....

If you don't think Hell Among the Yearlings is (at LEAST) new Bluegrass, you're kidding yourself. She also does amazing versions of old timey bluegrass songs. Her accompaniest is probably the most tasteful lead guitar bluegrass has ever had the pleasure of including in their company.
I also listen to:
Osbourne Brothers (IMO better than the Stanleys; even if the St. do have a more illustrious and longer history) are a more entertaining crowd if y'ask me.
Leftover Salmon is a pretty intense
Old Crow Medicine Show
And Bill Monroe and his bluegrass boys are okay. For the most part, the recordings I get from them are all in their old age where they lack a real energy (as far as I'm concerned)

In the end, this thread was about taking NONbluegrass songs and making them bluegrass songs.

Still, thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any suggestions for up tempo stuff from those artists you mentioned?

Stompin' Tom Conners has some good tunes I have heard covered by Bluegrass bands...esp. Gumboot Cloggeroo and Sudbury Saturday Night.
