Maybe a rude question, but I'll ask anyway. How much do you make?
I am a certified teacher, with a Bachelor of Education and 2 years teaching experience: 1 year in the public school system and one year teaching in a 'Canadian Hogwans' academy.
I was offered a job for 2.1 million. Does this sound right? I have heard salarys from 1.8 to 2.8 million. What is fair? |

Where was the job offer? Hagwon, public school, or University? How many classes per week? 2.1 at a hagwon is OK for someone fresh off the boat, but you can do better.
In a lot of places, your quals and experience don't count for much in terms of salary. Kind of messed up, but that's the market place...

2.1 is mediocre. A lot of places won't care that you have prior teaching experience, and in some hogwans it could be a detriment, especially if you're over 30. |

Search around, there ARE jobs out there that pay well. Some too well give the amount of work required. I do 26 hrs a week and earn 4mil, teaching in a university. It's nice.

Some places will offer you 2.8, but then you are required to work 10 hours a day. That works out to about the same as someone who gets paid 2.1 and works 6 hours a day.
If you are experienced, there are some hagwons that take that into consideration, albeit not many. You might want to wait until the public school system does their hiring. I think they start interviewing around January. If you are used to teaching 35-40 kids, this shouldn't be a problem for you. I know that 12 is just enough for me, and I am quite happy at my Hagwon. They pay teachers based on experience and cerification.
Good luck, and remember to always talk to current teachers at the school to get the low down. |

Meggiebea,
If you're a certified teacher with two years experience you can do better, alot better, than that. Although if that's for a uni posisiton, it might be worth it. Personally I have a job that has me clearing 3 mill a month. It is in the sticks though, so it's a bit of a trade off.
Good luck with the job hunting. |

WOW!!! Ok what am I missing? I see all these jobs being advertised for 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 million won. Where do you find these jobs which pay 3.0 or 2.8 or (oh my) 4.0 million? I see some advertised for 2.3 but you need to have two years teaching experience in Korea, they say my teaching experience in Canada does not count. |

I don't know who they are, but their BS don't count either. With your experience and credential, you shouldn't accept no less than 2.5 mil.
"Fresh meat" with no experience just out of school are getting 2.2 mil these days. |

LOL, huh?
"With your experience and credential, you shouldn't accept no less than 2.5 mil"
so I should be getting like 2.5 or more?
WHERE? How do I find these schools? Is it all negotiation or is it offered?
Can I make that much in public, or just hogwons?
So confused! I need a hug |

With your experience you could get 2.4 in a Public School here.
You could also work at an International School where you would teach other subjects (not just English). I have a friend in Seoul who works for such a school, he is like you and me a certified teacher. He has been at his school for 4 years now and he makes roughly 3 million won per month. |

You can easily make that much in public schools with some overtime. Let's say you teach 22 classes (one class is 40 minutes) which seems to be the norm in most schools. With just eight classes of overtime you can make up to three million. Actual class time is 20 hours (60 minutes). That leaves you an additional 20 hours to make lesson plans, study Korean, surf the net...
At a hakwon you would likely have to teach a LOT more than 30 classes a week to make 3 million...they don't have the funds that the government does. Either that or a lot of additional duties. |

It's not necessarily that they don't have the funds. It's just that it's their money - so they're less inclinded to part with it (if you're distributing government money it's a different story - if you can "justify" it, what do you care).
Like the taxi driver said to me today after I proudly told him how much I make: "Too little. You should demand more!"
I said, "My wonjang may die on the spot if I demand more."
"No! He's got plenty! Sam Baek Manwon minimum, you fool!"
Deep down I feared he was right, but if I demand the max how can I expect a raise next year...?
