I just gotta laugh! I'm American just defended Canadians in another thread and today we celebrated a teacher's birthday. She's Canadian and couldn't blow out the candles so another teacher helped out and she quickly blurted out in half-hearted laughter, "Give me a break! I'm not a windy American!"

I didn't know what to make of that comment so I just walked away. And all this after she thrusted her camera in my face and commented to others, "We'll get him to take the pictures."

Whatever, man...

I can't believe this Canadian vs American b.s. is really that big'a deal. It's all pretty f'n stupid if ya ask me.

I guess THAT'S one Canadian I can cross of my Christmas card list!

BTW, just a rant. No need to turn into MORE Canadian vs American b.s.

I can't judge either way, but people can say things they don't mean, that mean something different to different people, say something that is an inside joke to someone else or she could just be a stupid ass...

This might just be my all-time favorite sentence of all time.

Yes, I'd say scratching off the Christmas card list is the appropriate response. Nothing else. However, if a request for help comes up later, you might remember that your toenails just happen to need clipping. I mean, in a moment of breathlessness, all she can come up with is a comparison to your nationality, what could you possibly owe her?

Oversensitive American?

She didn't say all Americans are windy, yet there are indeed plenty of ideological or opinionated people from that country that get a considerable share of international attention.

It isn't, outside of Dave's, which keeps perpetuating the faux rift.

Maybe she was talking about Chicago. Chicago is the "Windy City"

Possibly.

Call me silly but when my bathtub drain got clogged this week (after only living here under two months) the first thing I thought of was blaming it on the previous occupant's nationality.

To clarify, when I meet an American the most I want to do is tickle them a bit -- at most stab them. Playfully, mind you.

Jews on the other hand...

Ah, what a letdown,

I thought this thread would be about flatulence.

Now if that's what she meant then I would'a Embarassed and say, "Ah! Ya, got me!" but that's not what she meant.

Over-sensitive? Not really as the COMMENT didn't bother me then and doesn't bother me much now. It's the fact that it was a negative comment (I think) towards another nationality, MY nationality, in my pressence and spoken with such an automatic/natural manner that I believe she actually harbors an ill opinion of Americans in general. Still, a "windy American" is a first for me. I'm still confused by it.

Maybe we have a greater lung capasity from our puffed-up chests and constant bragging!

My point is all this Canadian/American petty squabbles. It's all pointless. What we need is a Dokdo/Takeshima of our own that we can REALLY base our hatred of each other on. Let's see....how about Vancouver Island? Only we'll call it....Usamerishimado!

Or how about total control over the Great Lakes? Our Coast Guard in the Lakes ARE starting to arm their boats with machine guns! (Which is ridiculous and unnecessary!)

Now excuse me while I prepare my Usamerishimado banners and flyers...heck, I'm even gonna get married on MY island! (Braveheart just came to mind! Very Happy "It's MY island!")

I love the people who respond sincerely to these OPs. It's like Little House on the Prairie.

She could have used "windy" in the Korean sense. Paramdoongi (a playboy) is generally translated as "windy boy." Just an idea.
