Was writing up my student reports using OpenOffice Writer when I needed to open an XLS document. Instead of opening another window the application CHANGED to Calc and deleted my document!!!!
Have resorted to using notepad.

Well, what would you expect, that OOo Writer open an Excel worksheet in Writer, instead of Calc! Sheesh...
Rocklee, instead of dreaded notepad, you should be using notepad++ Ofcourse, be careful when you close that window...
How many of the users here have had their hands on other *nix OSs? Anyone experienced using *BSD or other systems with wine?
No, not that wine, you bacchus worshipper! |

| I never heard of that before in Open Office. It cant do anything without prompting you to save a document. The only time I had heard of anything remotely like that was in using Microsoft Word. |

Well not in my case unfortunately. Now Open Office is buggy and won't even open any of my files. I have to open the application first.

Thats not OOo's fault. Get your WinDoze straightened. If file associations dont work, its not the fault of application, but the OS.
Check out sysinternals.com, maybe there's something that might help you fix the file association thing.
Having said, that I have had similar thing happen to my file associations at random as well. |

After reading this thread and talking to a mate. I decided to give ubuntu a try. It's not bad, My work computer runs faster on it than XP. At home I don't see much of a speed difference. Most things work that I've tried so far.
The deal killer for me is not being able to setup TV-out! I have an nvidia Geforce 6200 AGP. I tried the twinview and other instructions in the wiki and other sites.
Any ideas? I like ubuntu so far but I can't say it's as easy to setup as XP, and without TV-out I don't think I'd use it much. |
