Bass: Victor Wooten
Evidence. |
Real men play fretless.
Wooten is a great player, but like Chambers on drums, a bit to mechanical for many. Jaco had real style. |
Mechanical???
Okay, I waited a few seconds to let it sink in..
So
I had a feeling someone would-- mechanical???
Sorry about that. As I was saying, I had a feeling someone would post some mediocre bass performance in a bid to one-up Wooten. Victor farts more interesting riffs than that vid you linked. Playing a fretless bass? Not impressive at all. |
Fanboy.
Jaco was a great player, but quite different from Wooten. It was my mistake to bring them both to the same table, and if you had any musicality in you - even to play the spoons - this is where you would have gone.
However, all tin ears and wooden limbs aside, I didn't say that Wooten wasn't a proficient player, (I have seen wooten at a Steve Smith clinic I attended - they toured together for a short while; he is indeed amazing), but there is not a shred of doubt that Jaco was a true genius on the bass, taking the instrument to places that Wooten hasn't been. Vice-versa, for all the purists, though in a radically different sense.
Mechanical. Well, I'm no cartographer, but I will try to at least provide an easier legend. Let's go with 'technical' then. Like Dennis Chambers, Wooten is a highly technical player with incredible technique and really fast, clean chops. This, to some, seems to lack nuance or 'feel'. Clearer? It's jargon a musician would be able to decypher; sorry for losing you.
My reply was trying to lighten the mood between us "real men play fretless" - that's humor to most - but you wish to continue digging at me (over matters you know nothing about - your love of Wooten sounds like a teenage crush, evidenced by your ignorance toward a recognized genius on the instrument; not a word of praise for a man who helped raise the instrument from a mere supporting role); heck, I doubt you even knew who Jaco was until I enlightened you. He was probably one of Wooten's early influences.
In the future, try going past the first page when you Google "great bass players".
Sorry to derail the topic with this silly tiff. Let's return to regular broadcasting.
Drummer # 2: Omar Hakim.
Bassist #3: Gary Grainger. This vid is from Dennis Chambers "Serious Moves" DVD, so he steals the show. There are perhaps some better clips of Grainger, but he isn't such a household name as Jaco or Wooten, so it's tough to come up with much. Great player though. One can look for the John Scofield band as well to find some of his playing. |
