Poll: Third of U.S. voters link Israel, messiah return

Almost one-third of U.S. voters identify with Christian Zionism when its defined as Israels control of all the Promised Land as a condition for the messiahs arrival.
The poll carried out earlier this month by Zogby International for the Council for the National Interest found that 16 percent of respondents strongly believed, and 15 percent somewhat believed, that Israel must have all of the Promised Land, including Jerusalem, to facilitate the second coming of the messiah.

Some 53 percent didnt believe that statement and 16 percent werent sure. The council lobbies for cuts in U.S. assistance to Israel.

I would like to know more about the people they surveyed. I know a lot of religious, middle-class Canadians who would have only vaguest idea, if that, of what that statement means, but would probably answer "somewhat agree" simply because it sounds like it might be a biblical precept, and they don't want to go on record as disagreeing with the bible.

I'd imagine you've got the same sort of half-baked understanding of religious terminology in the US as well. (I read somewhere that the ATF people who were negotiating at the Branch Davidian compound thought that David Koresh was referring to animals when he talked about the seven seals in the Book Of Revelation. And those guys were civil servants.) I'm sure there ARE a lot of evangelicals who would know what the statement means, and would agree with it. But I'd like to know more before I agree that it could be 31% of the general public.
