I've heard that there are great jobs available in government and research institutes, doing some teaching but also proof-reading, writing speeches and doing research. As I have an academic background in social sicence as well as teaching, I was thinking that this could be an option for me.
But does anyone know how to get a job in this area? Are they advertised anywhere?
A while back I emailed my resume and coverletter to every institute I could find on the internet, but didn't get a single reply.
Is this a case where having contacts is essential? |

I would imagine so. Having a Masters and, ideally, a PhD would also be beneficial, alongside teaching experience. |

Don't worry. Any company (hagwon) will lick their lips at such an opportunity to send you to teach at one of these places if you so desire.
Also, you can try to network to find that there are vacancies and apply.
I was hassled to teach english in a research institute because I was a researcher in a research institute. The director for a prospective job had the idea I would teach english there. I refused because I am not going back there, I did my time and that's it.
Teaching adults in a research institute or in a hagwon is the same. |

Some of the largest research institutes and government organizations do hire full-time proofreaders, but not very often. Usually, they staff part time (yup, even the goverment hires in this gray area), and people go in a few days a week for a few hours. They don't have enough material to merit hiring anyone full time.
That being said, most of the places that DO hire full-timers don't pay all too well. Some banks and financial houses were just hiring, and I believe they were starting at something like 50 million won/year. For a complete 9-6 job with limited vacation and no housing, not that great.
Most of the jobs are offered through the grapevine as far as I know, but some places do take out adverts in the Times or Herald. Good luck. |
