On average, 1-1.2 million/month. Some months more, some less. |

As a couple we've budgeted 1.2 a month for food, bills, and other spending. So far we've gone over a bit, but things are calming down. |

Most months we spend between 60 and 80 man won for a family of 3.
Occasionally we go over that when we buy new stuff like omputers or a car, and more often than not we come in under 600k won. We live a comfortable lifestyle but spend most of our time either at home or out in the park. We don't drink so there is a HUGE saving there (maybe 400k per month for a couple drinking nights on the town).
I manage to save something close to 2 mil per month. |

I find this poll to be a bit misleading. First of all there are people who go to Korea to save money and others go to have a great experience and spend money. Then some people make 1.9 million won and others make closer to 3.0 million won and spend accordingly. I'd be more interested to know what the average, first year, salary is. Hey there's an idea, someone start a poll! |

This is not a misleading poll at all. Actually, it's quite straightforward.
Also, you make the assumption that people who earn more spend more, and that is not always true. I know people who do not earn that much here, yet they spend a lot more than people with higher salaries who also have families to support.
As for salaries, hey - here's an idea... click this link:

Living single in the 시골. I spend on average 500,000 a month. I don't go out of my way to save money, but i put away 1/4 of my paycheck right away each month. And a few times a year I'll send money home. That'll probably change a little as I start making weekend trips more often. But even if I would "live it up" a lot more, I don't see how I'd spend more than 1/2 my paycheck. If I were living in Seoul or Bundang again, that might be a different story. But being one of the few white people around cuts down on my expenses at the bar or hof.
Hell, last year I was spending 200,000 a month on my officetel's utilities fees alone. |

If your primary goal is to have a good time, then why come to Korea? I have not heard many people say they came to Korea to have a good time.

Some months 300,000-500,000 won.
Some months double that.
Rarely triple that. |

Quite the opposite.
I eat out in Korean restaurants at least four or five times a week. Because I do so with Koreans I only pay half the time. And Korean food is cheap in Korean restaurants in smaller communities away from the price-gouging big cities.
And I travel around the country on weekends. From one end to the other end for 20 to 30,000 won by comfy express bus. Accommodation is only 10 to 30,000 won in minbak, yeogwan or newer motels. Taxis and local buses are cheap to get around smaller cities.
I seriously don't understand how someone could spend more than a million won a month unless there's an expensive Western habit involved.
Maybe if I drank alot of imported beer and whiskey in bars instead of soju in Korean restaurants and soju tents and Korean friends' homes etc. Maybe if I went to Western-style restaurants or ordered beef a lot. Maybe if I collected DVDs or paid to "entertain" with Korean women.
Otherwise it's so easy to spend well under a million without even trying to save! |
