I really hate missionaries, especially the ones who go into jungles and make first outside contact with natives. How can you have the audacity to enter a community and start telling people their ideas of God are wrong and introducing them to new ideas of guilt and shame? That angers me just to think about.

Sure, some of them start up some services to help out impoverished people, but the fact that their motivation isn't really to help people but just to change their religion is appalling to me.

As for the OP, well, it is a Christian college, so what do you expect? Those people weren't necessarily missionaries, at least not according to what you posted.

They were, but after Huffdaddy, I refined my post into yes, it's a Christian school, but many people don't really understand what that means.

I agree with the OP on every aspect. Koreans here are still confused betwee what "christian" and "western" are. Thats how the missionaires ply their trade here. The missionaires here make me sick especially the mormons. They bait people by offering "free english lessons" to hook them in. I also hate missionaires who feel the need to go places such as Thailand to "save them" from what I've seen Thailand is doing OK, yeah its not as rich as some places but they do OK

I too have heard and seen evangelicals talk about how many people they have converted like it was a sales goal. Pat Robertson does it all the time on his show and I'm sure others do it to.

I too have never run into a Buddhist who tried to convert me or seen Buddhists protesting outside of churches on Christmas and Easter like the Christians do on Buddhas B'day, Solal etc. No wonder their religion has me fascinated for this and many other reasons.

Ya, I forgot about Buddha's Birthday. I had never seen so many "suits" walking around trying to convert on that day. No respect, that is no different than the Jehovah's witnesses coming by on Christmas back in Canada.

Found this, really makes me realize just how low my opinion of missionaries is. I can't post the link because the thread would be pulled.

I also saw two suited white missionaries literally annyoing some teenager walking along. THey were surrounding him and he was trying to get away but they followed and one kept going infront of him to block him. Rolling Eyes

I already posted this passage and the link to the site in the help me use the Bible to lie to and brainwash the young'uns thread. Don't think it got pulled. Will check.

I will now dispense my informed opinion on missionaries, no discussion on them needs to be complicated beyond it:

Missionaries suck.

Voila.

Try emailing the guy who runs http://www.ChristianESL.com. He's really nice and should be able to give you some great ideas/links. I think his website is fairly new, so you might not find anything there, but do email him. Also consider emailing a youth pastor in your home country or contacting an organization/university that specializes in Christian-based ESL. I'm sure there are tons of resources, but you'll probably have to approach this by contacting various people/organizations that can eventually get you headed in the right direction.

Who? William James here?

Yes, look at the happy faces of the kids he is leading in the right direction:

Just kidding, these are the folks advocated by fivecuckoos. So let's take a look at the mission of ChristianEsl. They must benevolent and benign...

Evangelism in a Page

ROMANS 10:9

One verse to share your faith, with 3 clear points.

Romans 10:9 "if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

Point 1 Confess that Jesus is Lord.

Point 2 Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead.

Point 3 Pray a prayer of repentance from your sin, so that you will be saved.

Memorize the verse and you will have it with you wherever you go. When the opportunity progresses to the point of decision pull out your Bible, or write it down, and underline the 3 points for them.

Romans 10:9 "if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Saved from what? Your sin.)

Now you have all you need to lead them in a prayer. Just look at the verse as you pray. The 3 points are clear. Confess, Believe, and be Saved.

Pray something like this, "Lord Jesus, I confess that you are my Lord. I believe that you rose from the dead. Please forgive me and save me from my sin so that I may live in heaven forever with you." Amen.

Talk About Jesus, Not Religion

As you go you will meet people of different faiths: Buddhist, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews. Most people are turned off when you try to convert them to a denomination or church. Just ask them if you can talk about the historical figure of Jesus. As you share the story of his life, his works, and his death, hopefully, they will naturally open their heart to Him. (Thanks to Todd Robinson and for the above insight.)

The fullest description of the Gospel can be found in I Corinthians 15:3-6.

Great evangelism resources can be found at http://www.campuscrusade.com/

(Protip: If you want to maintain enough denial to continue associating with your run of the mill, generally a nice person evanegelical--never click that link for the Campus Crusade for Christ...)

And why are you on the crusade? And how can you get started? Let's see:

Involve Your Local Church

Go for 2 years and make 2 disciples. Here's how:

Step 1 Cast the vision of doing mission by teaching English in your local church. Form a team who will pray for you, help you during the process, and keep in touch with you while you are overseas. You can use the TESOL Missions sermon we provide in the Pastor's Corner. By getting a job you won't have to raise support.

Step 2 Form a team of 2 or more and find a job in our job bank or any other resource like www.eslcafe.com (or go through a missions agency).

Step 3 As you teach English make disciples. Go 2 years and make 2 disciples. We have provided the discipleship and teaching tools you will need in our articles section.

"Linda," we'll call her, a Chinese, had received the gospel from a TESL teacher at her University. The English teacher had befriended her, discipled her, and eventually baptized her in a bathtub. Remarkably it was her dream, not to stay in America, but to return to China and share the gospel with native Chinese.
