My E6600 gets up to 70 under full load and only when it's overclocked. I'm using a cooler from Zalman which is a Korean company.

I use Intel Thermal Analysis Tool to monitor temp.

If you havn't overclocked then the standard cooling is fine.

At first I thought your Speedstep had kicked in but that woud change the multiplyer also.

I have read that these chips will throttle between 85-90 to prevent damage. Maybe that's the prob. But I think the mutiplyer would change with that too but I'm not sure.

I think Intel will replace it for you if you have a defective chip.

These chips were supposed to run cooler than the first dual cores. However many people seem to be having issues with heat.

Good Luck...let us know the verdict

Edit: I turned off all that Speedstep stuff in Bios as part of my overclock settings. It is activated under my "Standard" settings.

alright. i have R&R'ed everything. As of right now, everything seems stable. However, I haven't tested anything. I will be running a 2 hour stress test in a bit. Results to come.

P.S.

I am using HOT CPU Tester Pro 4

Further update - Thanks guys (demo and whomever recommended the credit card deal and the flashing bios).

Things done thus far:

-flashed BIOS with the latest upgrade
-R&R'ed heatsink and CPU
-Applied new thin F.U.C.K.I.N.G. layer of thermogel

Currently running stress test.

CL...sorry to say this, but the stock Intel cooler is more than good enough for the job. There is undoubtedly something else wrong and I truly don't think it has anything to do with the cooling system.

If you used too much heatpaste or if the CPU was defective or if it's still a BIOS problem (did you try to see if there is a newer BIOS? Flash it...), I don't know, but really, water cooling won't do anything.

If you want to test the cooler, open the box and put a housefan on full blast pointing into the box point-blank. I surmise that nothing will change.

I should have put this post in here. Glad you read the other thread.

Hope it works out for you, CL. Really.

Load-Test came out all 100%. Hmmm. I wonder. I will be calling Intel.

Worth noting - the cpu temp. has dropped significantly now idling around 28 to 30 degrees celcius. Looks like I won't need the liquid cooler. However, I wonder if it is too late for my cpu. We'll see.

Good to hear that the temperature dropped down nicely. That means you did a good job with applying that paste.

Umm... with a "load-test" you mean "Average-CPU(s) performance," right? I might be wrong but I think that it should be 100% - meaning that the CPU was running at full speed all the time and wasn't throttled down at all during the test.

Anyway, now that the temp stays low how's the gaming? Is the CPU speed still fluctuating under full load? If it is, you might want to try turning off that EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology).

I tried the less demanding game last night. It went well. Tonight I will try F.E.A.R. and load it again. Hopefully it's fine. We'll see. If it doesn't remedy the problem, I'll look for the EIST function.

Well, slightly off topic but I still very happy with my 3.4Ghz Dual core system.

My next system will be a Core 2 Duo though. I know the Ghz rating is not all what its about but we will see.

Can you see a big difference with regards to true 'multi-tasking' with a Core 2 Duo CPU?

You might want to take a look over HERE. On that site you can choose your CPU and compare it with other CPUs. (Too bad that they don't have them all there, but at least you get the picture.) So, looks like C2D is about twice as fast in multitasking as P4 @ 3.4GHz. If I were you I'd wait a bit longer and get quad core CPU... even though applications may not completely support them right away.

The sites that compare CPUs are kind of a joke. No 2 systems are alike and no 2 systems will perform identically, even with the same software loaded up.

I can't recall the site, (I believe it was ars) did a side by side with 2 identical computers (built the same day, same parts, same software on each) and they performed quite different in a few areas.

I suppose for a general reference, they might be useful, but don't put much stock in them.

Apparentlt, according to a few reviews I have read, the core duo smacks around the dual core fairly handily. Dual core (Intel's) was a bit of a lark, IMO. A knee-jerk response to AMD, not ready for prime-time, the Prescott of the 2 core world. Intel makes some fabulous trifles that nobody seems to call them on.

Yes, I also read about that, thats why I mentioned that Ghz is not all whats it about.

Well, it will be some time before I upgrade again, maybe 6 months or so. We will see. Smile

final outcome? As of right now (I am running outlook, all messenging services, dedicated F.E.A.R. server, playing F.E.A.R. through my dedicated server on the same PC, perusing the net, and working on stuff in word), everything seems to be back to normal. Thank you everyone for caring and helping. It's greatly appreciated and generously reciprocated.
