My laptop has a problem where it doesn't recongize the CD/DVD drive sometimes. When I go to my computer it is like the drive is not installed, usually if I restart the computer it will reappear but that is a pain in the butt. Does anyone know of any fixes for this problem. I have the xp discs with me so do I need to reformat and reinstall?

my wife's averatec laptop had this problem: the drive needed to be reseated. pretty much means take it out and put it back in. however, on hers we needed to take it to an actual repair place to keep the warranty intact. don't know what make yours is, maybe a repair place is the best way to go?

Sounds like you may need to take it apart. Are you tech savvy? First, I would go ahead and download all possible updates for your laptop. Then, I would go ahead, as a last resort, and just reformat your PC. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong in doing so. I recommend it once a year to keep everything fresh.
